Has anyone else noticed this at their zoo? Here in Indianapolis the aviary that is open to the outdoors allowing common sparrows to mix in with the display birds, if they can get through the fencing. That aviary was closed. In that aviary it is also possible for humans to walk IN. That aviary was closed, and no birds.
The Eagles, both Bald and Golden were also OFF display, not in their aviary. It is not one humans can walk through, only past. But, sparrows etc. are able to get in there I think.
Now, ostriches and flamingoes were still out and they are in open air displays.
In the waters display which is in a contained building, for the most part (seals and polar bears can both go in and outside via water routes), the penguins and puffins were on display but they are in sealed and cooled and wet environments. But there was one bird that is usually in the Amazon display, which is sealed and inside, and IT TOO was off display.
Do you suppose the avian flu scare is responsible for so many birds not on display, or is it just that it is getting colder since ostriches and flamingoes were still out? Has anyone observed anything similar at another zoo? Or read or heard anything?
