Food Allergies Stir a Mother to Action
ROBYN O’BRIEN likes to joke that at least she hasn’t started checking the rearview mirror to see if she’s being followed.

But some days, her imagination gets away from her and she wonders if it’s only a matter of time before Big Food tries to stop her from exposing what she sees as a profit-driven global conspiracy whose collateral damage is an alarming increase in childhood food allergies.

Ms. O’Brien has presented her views, albeit in a less radical wrapper, on CNN, CBS and in frequent print interviews. Frontier Airlines and Wild Oats stores distribute the allergy-awareness gear she designed.

Her story is one of several in a new book, “Healthy Child, Healthy World” (Dutton, March 2008), whose contributors include doctors, parents and celebrities like Meryl Streep.

1. I worked on banning GE crops in Butte County, CA (we failed) after suffering food intolerances
At least the California rice farmers have agreed to not grow genetically engineered rice a year after our campaign (2004).

I still have blisters/hives on my right hand from eating the crappy cheap white french bread received in my free food box a few weeks ago.

I usually only get the day old organic wheat bread from canned foods at $1.79 a loaf, but beggars can't be choosers and I was hungry...

Fast Food Nation is a must read for all that care about what they eat.

2. Jeff Smith spoke a few years ago at our "Turkey Free" Thanksgiving
It was a real eye opener! I now avoid soy / corn / Canola / unless they're organic. But you're right - beggars can't be choosers!

3. Our bakery outlet has organic for $0.79 a loaf.
I get that or, when I'm having a craving and can squeeze it in, Great Harvest.

I could put together a good organics food goodie box for you. I just found nice organic stuff at Meijers. I've got a vegetarian bag going for the local Food Bank, but I could go through that and put together a nice box to send to you, if you would like. I always worry about those with food allergies/sensitivities and special diets since our house is in that boat with dairy.
