10. AKA Nutritional Yeast
• Vegetarians often use it as a supplement because a vege diet can be low in B vitamins
• I believe it is a major ingredient in Vegemite (an awful Australian concoction, sorry Aussies)
• It IS good on popcorn! drizzle a little olive oil on the popcorn, sprinkle on the Nutritional Yeast and grind some fresh black pepper over the top! mmmmmm...

11. Fleas
Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 08:00 PM by HockeyMom
I mixed it into my cats food. When it gets into the animal's bloodstream, it gives off an offensive odor (to the fleas) and they won't go on the animal.

Don't know if it works for humans too.:)

13. Proves that fleas are smarter than humans!

Humans actually eat the stuff by choice in spite of its awful taste. Fleas, being the more intelligent of the species, know enough to get the hell away!

17. That might be the B vitamins doing it.
One of the B vitamins (don't remember which one) works as an insect repellent, if you consume enough. I don't know how much "enough" is.

12. As sold in most stores, it's the by-product of the brewing process
left over from the original live yeast used to brew the beer/ale. It's also known as nutritional yeast.

It's rich in the B-vitamins, so it's suitable for those who don't eat meat.

You can get it in most health food stores and supermarkets, as well as the vitamin supplement stores.

14. The tan scuzz on the bottom of the homebrew bottle
doesn't taste very good, but it's high in B vitamins. It's pretty bitter stuff, though. My alcoholic ex probably saved himself a lot of brain damage by always drinking the yeast in the bottom of the bottle and getting extra thiamine that way.

A variety has been made into nutritional yeast, a yellow flaked product that can be use to impart a vaguely cheesy flavor to a lot of things. It's packed with B vitamins and protein. Vegan cooks use it for all sorts of things from ersatz cheese sauces to enriching breads to sprinkling on veggies, grains and popcorn. Some people say it'll reduce fleas, so I've fed it to my cats in the past. It makes them sneeze, but once the get the hang of eating it, they lap it up straight, no canned cat food needed to entice them.

Other than that, real brewer's yeast is what you put into barley malt syrup laced with hop tea to turn it into either beer or ale.

16. Dog farts
If it's a component of their diet, it can sometimes be the cause of some wicked gas.

18. B vitamins, protein, and fiber
B vitamins are the main thing that people use it for, but it does have a good bit of protein and fiber too.

The taste is kind of bad, but it can be reasonable when sprinkled on salads along with toasted oat bran and stuff like that. It takes some getting used to.

Yesterday I discovered something surprising about its taste. I made a chocolate smoothie from a powdered smoothie mix, and put in a spoonful of brewers yeast to boost the protein and fiber enough to make it a meal. I couldn't taste the brewers yeast in the smoothie and it seemed like it made the chocolate taste more intensely chocolate. Seemed pretty odd but worth a repeat try sometime.
