Pigs' feet: the new superfood

Last Updated: 12:01am GMT 03/03/2008

As Britain's spending on cosmetic surgery soars, Fiona MacDonald Smith suggests it's time that we chopped and changed our diet instead

The latest anti-ageing food? Pigs' trotters. That's right, you heard it here first. In New York, the most talked-about new opening of the past couple of months has been a Japanese restaurant called Hakata Tonton, where 33 out of the 39 dishes contain pigs' feet.

/snip/

"The key is to remember we're omnivorous," agrees nutritionist Christian Lee, who is the national trainer for the Dr Nicholas Perricone cosmetics and nutrition empire. "Have you ever noticed how women age more rapidly than men?

That's because they don't eat enough protein. The days you don't eat protein are the days you age. The body can't store protein, but it needs it for cellular production and function.

"The days you don't eat protein are the days you age."

I find that interesting - there's a whole lot more informative stuff in this article.

Includes a list at the end of the article called

"FOODSTUFFS THAT KEEP YOU YOUNG"

Worth reading methinks.

1. Women don't age more rapidly than men
Women are just judged more severely for going through the changes of age.

2. you go right ahead and eat pig's feet
But do remember that they step in a LOT of pig shit. If you think we're having problems with ecoli now -- :puke:

Sorry, but I don't even feed those pig parts to my animals. And I'm not going to let some sexist comment about *women aging faster than men* (which is total bullshit anyway) change my mind. ESPECIALLY when it comes from someone who makes his living telling women they will continue to look like shit unless they buy his products. :grr:

BTW -- take a good look at Dr Nicholas Perricone. Any one of his book cover pictures makes him look like an Egyptian pharoah AFTER he's been through the 70 day natrol *treatment*. Yeah -- we all want to look mummified.... :puke:

9. Actually, I don't think I've ever had pig's feet, but I think I'll give it a try.

I'm not too worried about the "ecoli" thing, I think they may wash them before marketing them.

We have a local butcher here - I'll ask him.

I found chicken hearts to be tasty and agreed with me well, so I created a recipe for making pasta sauce with them.

Locally I could rarely find just the hearts without the rest of the gizzards, liver and so on - I asked my butcher, and a few weeks later, I had 5 pounds of just hearts - lasted over a year for my sauce.

And I don't really care if the person that provides information that I like is not an angel.

A good idea is a good idea.

3. Did you bother to check any of the sources cited in that article
Fiona MacDonald Smith is a history teacher. Also cited are a restaurant owner and a trainer for a cosmetic company.

That's just sad.

Instead of throwing out a blanket condemnation and some "facts"

how about a link or two?

Fiona MacDonald Smith is a history teacher, I am an Auto/Truck mechanic.

My skills and knowledge go way beyond fixing machinery.

SO - -

what is your point?

7. Nutritional advice from restaurant owners and cosmetologists?
If that meets your standards, that's OK with me.

10. I got my info from the article YOU linked to in your OP.
Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 10:20 AM by cosmik debris
Did you even read it?

The article cites the advice of a restaurant manager and a trainer for a cosmetics firm. It is there in YOUR article.

Why should I provide links when you don't even read your own links?

Here is a quote straight from your own post. "...the national trainer for the Dr Nicholas Perricone cosmetics and nutrition empire." Do I have to provide a link to your post?

Here is a quote from the article linked to in your OP: "...a Japanese restaurant called Hakata Tonton, where 33 out of the 39 dishes contain pigs' feet.

The reason for this, according to its owner, Himi Okajima, is that they are rich in collagen,"

And just to ease your mind, here is a link to the books written by Fiona MacDonald Smith.

You know, google is your friend. If you use google BEFORE you post, you won't look like such a fool.

6. Well, I appreciated the link
Which I read, all the way through. And I think some people shouldn't get too freaked out by the idea.

We need protein, proven fact, every day. Because we can't store it. And that whole bringing up the "this is a smear against women" is just lame. The fact is, our food supply is growing shorter. I'd put links about that here but if you don't already realize that, you really aren't paying attention, perhaps due to your lack of protein.

Populations that have survived on this planet will tell you, use the whole animal. Waste not, want not. But, some people now say, eww, they walk in pig shit. Well, chickens walk and fish swim in theirs, as well. So, what do we do? We cook it! Been working for a long time for us.

Enter Mojorabbit, :hi: , been eating them pickled feet for a long time. You will find jars of them behind thousands of bars, all around the county. And, yes, I can vouch for that.

So, I just wanted to say, don't sit there on your high horse trying to force your idea of "civilization" on the rest of us. Read the article, make your own decisions, but save your proselytizing for GD. Some of us come to this Forum to actually learn something. Not to listen to cock-eyed rants.

12. Mmmmmm, I love me some trotters!
Americans are so fucking spoiled in what they are willing to eat. "Offal" cuisine is experiencing a surge for a reason, because it's good!

Reads to me just like another tabloid "Eat this and you'll live forever without wrinkles!" screamer...

...likely inspired by the vested industry. :eyes:
