My local co-op has it in bulk, and I've always liked it.

28. that's made with sodium hydroxide, you know. possibly potassium hydroxide too.
nasty, nasty caustic chemicals. even very small amounts can give you a wicked chemical burn. imagine what those chemicals could do to the environment, not to mention your hair and scalp.

4. This may sound strange but...
Dragongentleman uses our dishwashing liquid, Seventh Generation, on his hair. It's made of coconut-based natural ingredients, water, and .05% preservatives. Works very well.

5. I love Alaffia products
www.alaffia.com if they don't carry it in your health food store. Not only is the shampoo great, but sales proceeds go towards buying bicycles and other practical projects in West Africa where they get their fair trade shea butter.

...is that they are pretty much all alike and paying a high price for one does not make it much better than the cheaper ones available.

11. The ones mentioned in this thread are not made from industrial chemicals...
as are the mainstream, heavily advertised brands. Additionally, there's no reason a shampoo or soap made with "natural" ingredients need be any more expensive than a store brand. AFAIK, Castille soap is made from olive oil and lye. Pretty basic stuff.

like to know more about what all the chemicals are. They may just be harmless but I'd like to know
I will look into it more. I also would like aloe.

13. mayonnaise
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070721020100AARIuZ9

<snip>

Egg is excellent for hair. Not only is it a great conditioner and nourisher, but it also increases shine. Apply egg to your daughter's hair once a week, and wash off after half an hour with cold water.

Mayonnaise, which is made of oil, egg and vinegar, is also excellent for the hair. In addition, mayonnaise also helps getting rid of lice. Lice breathe through their legs, and applying mayonnaise blocks their air passage, suffocating them. You may not be able to get rid of nits (lice eggs) in this manner though. Make sure you keep checking your child's hair regularly for lice.

<snip>

http://www.co.brown.wi.us/health/lice_info_guide.htm

<snip>

1b. Instead of a special shampoo or creme rinse, or if that treatment hasn’t worked, you may use a mayonnaise shampoo, which will suffocate the lice:

- Use only 100% real mayonnaise, not light, low-fat, fat-free, or even salad dressing like Miracle Whip.

-Apply generously to hair, making sure all the hair is saturated.

-Cover the hair tightly with plastic wrap or a shower cap for at least 2 1/2 hours (closely

supervise young children when using plastic).

-Rinse out with warm water and shampoo.

27. without chemicals?
Edited on Thu Apr-10-08 01:03 PM by enki23
every shampoo on the market, even the ones marketed as "natural" shampoos depend on large quantities of chemicals that can form strong hydrogen bonds. it's probably better to avoid them altogether, if you can.

35. What do you use or recommend?
Lye is dangerous but soap is lye+fat. Water is dangerous but is in many things. Do you save your urine, let it turn ammonia-y and use that? Ammonia can be dangerous in concentration also.

What do you use or recommend?

39. I don't understand your question. All shampoos contain 'chemicals'.
Water, for goodness sake is technically a chemical. Are you asking for shampoos with milder ingredients? Are you dealing with an allergy, a sensitivity, or a dry scalp? Do you seek a shampoo with natural ingredients? Which are untested on animals? Just asking for a shampoo without chemicals in it is silly.
