Bird Flu Medicine Toxic for Teens (Rumsfeld connection)
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2008/05/117_24103.html
Concerns are rising over side effect of bird flu drug Tamiflu on teenagers.

Tamiflu is Swiss-based Hoffman-La Roche's antiviral for general influenza A and B but is also used to combat bird flu. However, worries have surfaced about the possibility of the medicine causing mental disorders among teenagers.

http://money.cnn.com/2005/10/31/news/newsmakers/fortune_rumsfeld/
NEW YORK (Fortune) - The prospect of a bird flu outbreak may be panicking people around the globe, but it's proving to be very good news for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other politically connected investors in Gilead Sciences, the California biotech company that owns the rights to Tamiflu, the influenza remedy that's now the most-sought after drug in the world.

Rumsfeld served as Gilead (Research)'s chairman from 1997 until he joined the Bush administration in 2001, and he still holds a Gilead stake valued at between $5 million and $25 million, according to federal financial disclosures filed by Rumsfeld.

Does Donald Rumsfeld own all the aspriin companies too?
Give me a fucking break. And bird flu has killed a lot of people in Asia. But I guess brown skinned people dying doesn't matter to you does it?:sarcasm:

3. How would you have any clue what matters to me?
You can start a thread about aspirin if you want. This one is about Tamiflu and the evil men who profit from it. You know who worked for Bayer aspirin don't you? Granpa Bush. They also made chemical to gas undesirables in the chambers. That would be a separate thread. Thanks.

5. Korea Times? That's your source? Really?
I'm all in favor of fighting against Rumsfeld's latest scams... but you still have to hold yourself to a certain standard of evidence.

6. I think you miss the point of this forum
If a higher standard of evidence was required, there would be no posts here.

The whole point is to post things for which there is minimal evidence and blow it all out of proportion.

That's what the Health Scare Lounge is all about.

8. Is snopes better?
http://www.snopes.com/politics/medical/tamiflu.asp

People who complain about sources are some of the weakest posters at DU.

12. That, again, doesn't really address the issue with the KT source though.

The journalism does look pretty bad in that article, so I'm not sure how much stock you'll want to put in it.

9. No side effects reported in Korea.
From the story:there has not been a reported case of side effects here, but the Seoul Shinmun, a local daily, reported that a woman in her 30s said she had nightmares after taking the drug in 2005.

In Japan over 6 years 1078 teenagers exhibited bizarre behavior. 50% of teenagers worldwide exhibit bizarre behavior on a daily basis. What does that prove? If you are scared don't take the drug. The flu is mutating more rapidly every year. It is estimated that the avian flu will mutate into a virus capable of human to human transmission within 5 years, and when it does a whole lot of people are going to die. Probably enough to dramatically reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
