Can you really improve your vision with eye exercises?

I've seen books on this sort of thing, where supposedly one can improve even problems such as nearsightedness with eye exercises. Anyone here had any personal experience with this?

2. I would guess it depends on the type of eye problem.
I can't see any way exercise would help cataracts, glaucoma, or astigmatism. For other eye problems, I really couldn't hazard a guess.

3. Vision can be improved by eating a raw food diet high in
leafy greens and veggies.

13. Omigod! That is so true!
I have been very nearsighted since the age of 11. Every time I have gone to the eye doc, I would either get a stronger prescription or the same strength (it seemed like it was always stronger, though). Last time I went, I was in total shock: the man said that I had to have a WEAKER prescription! It was the first time and the only difference is that I make sure to have a big raw salad every day, along with starting my days with raw fruit! I credit raw organic apple cider vinegar along with Swiss chard:)

14. As we age, our eyes tend toward farsightedness.
In nearsighted people, this often results in a weaker prescription. Happened to my dad around 40-45, that's about what you are, right? His prescription wasn't very strong to begin with, and he ended up not needing his glasses for most tasks.

But hey, that's just the mundane, understood, common explanation. I'm sure your magic salads helped you.

15. Um...not
As I stated, my prescription was always very strong. Hell, I was once told I was doubly legally blind, which I take to mean I had double the eyesight of a person needing a seeing-eye dog. However, vanity prevented me from wearing my specs in my teens/20s; I went around looking hot and seeing not-so-hot. Oh, well...

And as for my 'magic salads'? I'll take them over your mystery meat any day, Sparky!

19. It isn't "stalking" to point out when you're wrong.
I can't help it that you happen to be wrong in just about EVERY SINGLE POST.

You must have gotten your "doubly legally blind" classification from a Cracker Jack box.

24. Oh was it now?
A genuine eye doctor said the precise words that you were "doubly legally blind." Is that correct? Are you SURE about that? Or was it something similar to that phrase?

I love this. The more you type, the more people will realize you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Keep it up!

4. I tried it and I hated it.
It's like doing kegels with your eyeballs. Very frustrating, and you have to do it a lot, very frequently, and over a long period of time to even have a chance that it will work, which I think is doubtful. So I got Lasik and have been very happy with the result. And I was very, very, very nearsighted.

5. I increased eye muscle strength by moving index finger back and
forth and moving eyes with it as far to each side as I could. The other one was the index finger out as far as possible from the nose and then moving in, keeping an eye on the finger. Five minutes or so each day for about 3 weeks. Really helped and also lessened headaches I was getting from eye strain. Hope this helps.

6. Not much
I tried the exercises, and got some minor improvement, but I will still require LASIK vision correction in a few years. Fortunately, I don't mind wearing reading glasses, and don't have any problems with far vision.

Generally, visual problems can't be improved much by exercise or muscle tone changes -- the problem is that the lens and/or the eyeball change shape with age.

Some people do get a lot of improvement, but I suspect they have a lot of physical tension in the muscles that move the eyes. In technical terms, disorders like oculomotor dystonia. An ophthalmologist could explain things in much greater detail.

But, the exercises are worth trying. Even if you only get a little relief from tension headaches, it would be worth the effort. But don't get your expectations too high. That way, any improvement will be a pleasant surprise. But don't take my word for any of this -- see if you can find a student eye doctor, many of whom love to do informal patient education. There must be some kind of eye forum you can post questions in.

In general, miracles require money. (*sigh*)

7. I would think
it would help stop problems from developing. Can't say for sure though.

I do know this. When I was taking CS classes in school our Professor told us to follow the 20/20/20 rule-Every twenty minutes turn your vision away from the computer and look at something more than twenty feet away for >twenty seconds. It really helps me when I am using my computer.

8. I'd try it.
But I'm guessing that getting me back from 20/650 in each eye would take to long.

9. I have severe myopia
I could not read until the second grade as I could not see the blackboard, but did not realize it....yikes.

I remember my first glasses allowing me to see stars and leaves on trees for the first time, now that was a thrill.

My eyesight has continued to get more myopic through my lifetime with one exception.

I had a job after grad school looking for Gypsy moths as part of an effort to prevent them from becoming established in California. These were the days of no ag jobs and there were three of us with Masters in Entomology on the minimum wage crew looking for Gypsy Moth egg masses or pupae in people's back yards. We had to go through wood piles, piles of bricks, everything in everyone's yards had to be picked up and sorted through and put back. It was sort of like light weight lifting 8 hrs a day.

What was weird is that I got physically very strong and my eyesight improved. I actually had an improvement in my vision that required new glasses that had a lower prescription, I recall a 1 diopter improvement.

Once I went back to my old ways of normal life (not weight lifting for a job) the steady increase in nearsightedness returned.

until in my teens (!!). Something I have in common with Charles Starkweather. :silly:

26. Oh My, were you shocked when you could see things
you had only seen in books?

This is one of my most vivid and precious memories, seeing leaves and the stars for the first time. I feel little bits of this thrill every time I get a new pair of glasses. It is almost as though the clear vision is a form of nourishment.

Who is Charles Starkweather ?

27. Yes, I remember my older sister got glasses first.
Didn't know SHE needed them until she tested for her driver's permit and barely passed the vision test. I tried on her glasses and knew at once I had the same problem.

Charles Raymond Starkweather (November 25, 1938 – June 25, 1959) was a spree killer who murdered 11 victims in Nebraska and Wyoming during a road trip with his underage girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate.

... in his teens it was discovered that he suffered from severe myopia which had drastically affected his vision for most of his life.
