Nancy-Ann DeParle was a mistake...a big mistake
---

This is why DeParle was a mistake.
This is why I am losing faith in Obama, who appointed her, regarding public health insurance.

Everyone should be up in arms about this statement.
DeParle has to know the majority of Americans want a "Medicare For All" option yet she says this BULLSHIT?

The "ideological objections to government's role" is with the small minority of this country. DeParle speaks as if it is not.
Spouting the corporate line is not "Change We Can Believe In".

:grr:

From the article below:
However, DeParle acknowledged that ideological objections to government's role would be hard to overcome. She spoke at a forum sponsored by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

White House seeks health plan compromise
Insurance industry remains skeptical, GOP weary of public plans
The Associated Press
updated 1:38 p.m. PT, Wed., April 15, 2009

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama's top health care adviser said Wednesday a compromise is within reach on a government health plan for the middle class that wouldn't drive private insurers out of business.

Offering the option of government coverage to workers and their families has become one of the most contentious issues in the debate about overhauling health care to cover the uninsured and curb costs. Obama has proposed a public plan, and liberals insist it be part of any final deal. Conservatives and businesses fear that could open the door for a government takeover of the system.

Nancy-Ann DeParle, director of the White House health reform office, said a public plan could be designed to address concerns about the federal government overreaching in its role.

"I'm actually very hopeful that we'll be able to reach an agreement on that, because it is part of the president's plan," DeParle said in a session with reporters at which she fielded repeated questions on the issue. "It's included because he wanted a mechanism to lower costs and to keep the private sector honest."

1. She's not HHS--she's simply a White House advisor, not subject to Senate Confirmation
She's a "coordinator"--a referee amongst factions, and a filter for Obama and a 'recommender'--she's not at the forefront of policy making. She arbitrates between competing sides.

In short, she's not "the decider." Don't ascribe to her more power than she actually has. This article is elucidative:

2. Keep the health insurance companies 'honest?'" With whom--their patients or their bottom line?
Edited on Thu Apr-16-09 08:11 AM by rocktivity
The business of private health insurance is to profit by collecting more in premiums than they pay out in benefits. Consequently, it's been in their best interests to come up with methods and reasons for NOT paying out benefits. The end result is tens of millions of underserved and uninsured people. That's why for-profit basic health care must go the way of the gaslight and horse and buggy, even if it cost Congress campaign contributions. If the president doesn't want to put the health insurance companies out of business, nationalize them!

4. Am I missing something?
What I read indicates that the "public plan" is what the 'conservatives' are fighting due to their concerns about "government takeover". But, that such a plan will be included (to keep private insurers honest).

All Republicans should have to take the private plans. They don't want 'em? Can't have 'em. (mean)
