Drug Court requires acupuncture for some repeat offenders

There are many consequences of a DWI conviction. Mug shots are published in the newspaper, interlocks are installed and jail time is sometimes served.

For those who opt into Metropolitan Court's Drug and DWI court, one of the requirements is 16 hours of acupuncture treatment.

Since the Drug Court's inception in 1997, acupuncture has been part of the treatment regimen. To qualify, offenders must have between two and five alcohol- or drug-related convictions. Drug Court aims to help offenders overcome their addictions, and acupuncture's role is to ease the symptoms of withdrawal and help them relax and stick to the program.

"It opens them up and gives them a clearer mind," said Daniel Blackwood, executive director of The Evolution Group Inc. Evolution is a counseling center that contracts with Drug Court for acupuncture, counseling and the court's other requirements.

Blackwood said recovering addicts suffer from a variety of problems, including insomnia, difficulty concentrating, extreme emotional reactions and physical coordination difficulties.

2. Acupuncture
I had a pinched nerve in my neck 20 years ago. Horrible chronic pain all the time.

Acupuncture fixed it.

It was a hell of a lot less intrusive than the spinal fusion the Doctors were trying to sell me!

3. I helped start an acupuncture drug treatment program . . .
. . . a while ago. It was and remains extraordinary to see people coming in off the street in the midst of intense withdrawal (cocaine, heroin, etc.), totally distraught, get a few needles put in, and within a few minutes be in either a deep meditative state or sleeping. Acupuncture may be "voodoo", but it does work for a great many things, including addiction. I don't recall the exact figures, but addicted people getting acupuncture along with a 12 step program had a substantially lower rate of recidivism than did any other treatment program.

4. voodoo
It's just a word that is meant to convey fear. It's kinda like the way Republicans use "socialism". If they don't like it, it is "Communist" or "socialist".

5. This is in NM..
which is turning out to be one of the more progressive states.

If anyone needs info re: addictions, check out "risk reduction" methods.
