Governors pressure Bush for help with Medicaid
Posted on Mon, Feb. 28, 2005
BY TODD J. GILLMAN
The Dallas Morning News

WASHINGTON - (KRT) - With states facing steep Medicaid cuts and rising costs, governors pressed President Bush for help Monday.

The president's budget would cut funding by about $60 billion over the next decade, and states warn that would force them to dramatically cut services or force some elderly and poor off the rolls.

At an hourlong White House meeting with members of the National Governors' Association - in Washington for their annual meeting - Bush promised to help revamp Medicaid but wouldn't back off plans to trim funding.

"We want Medicaid to work," Bush said. <snip>

2. Then Medicaid monies should go
directly to the states and not to the Federal gov't.

3. We need to pay attention to this
as the Governors will be forced to cut services if we let this happen. The last place that we can afford cuts is in health care. This is a life and death issue right up there with social security. If he wants to cut the cost of health care he should consolidate programs and fire the boys/girls at the top. The problem is not that it doesn't work but that, like most programs dealing with the poor, the money is going to the administrators instead of the needy. So bushie, if you want to make it work get rid of the top heavy administrators and give the money directly to the states to pay of health care and not paperwork.
