5 of nature's best cancer-preventing foods
Kathryn Roethel, Special to The Chronicle

Monday, August 9, 2010

As a veteran faculty member at the Stanford University Medical School, Dr. John Farquhar has seen thousands of patients try to beat cancer with aggressive chemotherapy treatments that "blast them with terrible side effects." But, as the founder of Stanford's Prevention Research Center, he believes he has helped other patients beat cancer before it starts using nature's medicine: vegetables and fruits.

Farquhar has worked at the university for 30 years as a professor, a cardiologist and the co-founder of the Stanford Prevention Research Center. He co-teaches a popular course called "The Best Diet Ever," (see box) in which he preaches the merits of five foods with strong anti-cancer agents: soy, onions, broccoli, tomatoes and blueberries.

"There's still uncertainty about how important nutrition is in cancer prevention," Farquhar said, "but I've found that if you deal with these specific foods, there's evidence that they all have cancer-fighting nutrients. As opposed to genetics, nutrition is something that people can control."

4. Yumminess does not involve onions.
The presence of onions makes any dish inedible. Nasty things.

5. Have you never had a Walla Walla sweet onion?
Hermiston (OR) sweets are pretty good, too.

11. Men should not eat soy.
You'll end up with low T. This per my endocrinologist.

Try grape seed and pomegranate extracts instead.

14. Soy is kryptonite to people with hypothyroidism.
You have to wait 12 hours between taking your meds in the morning and having soy the same day. If you take them together, soy just wipes out the hormone and you're just wasting money on your prescription.

he gets several cases of hypogonadism a month caused by soy. Only soy sauce is ok for men he says.

I am huge on pomegranite, though. Good to know that soy sauce is okay for men. Thanks. :hi:

19. I'm glad you asked
because I didn't know, but here is a link with more information. At the end of the article it says that you can have small amounts of anything on the list as long as you don't make any of these foods a cornerstone of your diet. http://www.suite101.com/lesson.cfm/18912/2313/3

18. This is a true story about broccoli. When I was in my early twenties,

I had a bizarre craving for broccoli. I ate it every day for over a year (mostly with a grilled pork chop or rigatoni). It wasn't because it was a cancer fighter (in the eighties I don't think people ever thought about it being a cancer fighter), it was simply that out of the blue I really craved it. Anyway when I was 24 I discovered lump in my breast. As soon as the specialist examined me he said it definitely was a tumor and a large one which needed to be removed immediately and biopsied. It was removed and tests showed it was benign.

For years I claimed that broccoli had something to do with the tumor being benign, despite people thinking I was flaky for saying so. Now I am feeling justified.
