Bottled Teas May Not Deliver on Antioxidants
Polyphenols which are the antioxidants in tea that ward off diabetes and cancer. Because they are bitter and astringent tea bottlers find ways to keep thetea polyphenol content low so that it tastes smoother and sweeter. Most consumers are not aware that the bottled teas don't have the same health benefits of brewed tea. Whoops.

Scientists have found that despite what bottled tea makers claim, many do not contain beneficial doses of protective antioxidants known as polyphenols.

In fact, some of the beverages have fewer polyphenols than a single cup of black or green tea made at home, they said.

The researchers measured the polyphenol levels in six different brands of bottled tea bought at grocery stores. Half of those tested contained "virtually no" antioxidants and the other half had small amounts of polyphenols that probably wouldn't be beneficial to consumers, according to Li.

The 16-ounce bottles analyzed contained between 3 and 81 milligrams of the nutrients, compared with the 50-150 milligrams found in a cup of home-brewed tea, the authors said.

1. How hard is it to boil water and stick in a teabag?
Even Trader Joe's is offering the insanity of bottled tea.

There are times when you are out and you are thirsty.... I'd certainly rather have a bottle of sugar-free or low sugar honest tea (green moroccan mint or green jasmine are my favs) when out rather than any other choices. And, they come in a convenient recyclable glass bottle. And, I do make brewed iced green, white and black teas by the gallon at home.

The problem is if they throw tons of sweetener in there. That said, the article said nothing about brands or anything else. It was worthless.

I boil 6 bags twice and make a gallon at a time. I would never buy bottled tea, it's not strong enough.

6. They haven't found a way to keep the sugar out, one half of a bottle
of some of these "healthy" drinks can have 18 grams of sugar perhaps more, the whole enchilada nets you 36 grams of pure sugar. Sugar one, antioxidants zero.
