Sad to say in 2007- this is news:
A small Georgia town's high school is trying out its first integrated prom.

Students say the self-segregation that splits social circles in school mirrors the attitude of this town of 4,000 people. So getting every student to break from the past could be a difficult task. With prom night about two weeks away, only half of the 160 upper-class students have bought tickets. And there's talk around the school that some white students might throw a competing party at a nearby lake.

2. Not being from the South, I have to ask...
...is this a remarkable story or is this sort of underground apartheid common in small southern towns like this one?

3. Hatred and racsim are hard to eradicate
Remember that there are those who still fight the Civil War on websites and think the South should have won.

4. It's not that Simple
It's just to easy to say this is all about race. This is self segregation this is done by a mutual decision of both groups. Its more about popular culture than race. These kids live in a small town they play sports together they go to school together they work together the interact with each other more than most people in this country. There was no mention of hatred

But when it's time to party the black kids don't want to listen to Travis Tritt and the white kids don't want to listen to Snoop dog.
The alternative party, are there any racial guidelines listed?

Being a small town there is the distinct possibility it's adult leadership taking over what the kids see as there party. Do you remember the kids in student government?

ok Elvis or Pat Boone? ok Pat Boone
The Beatles or Tommy James ok Tommy James
Alice Cooper or Chicago ok Chicago
same as it ever was
