Get married or get fired, sheriff says
An emergency dispatcher at a North Carolina sheriff's department was presented with an ultimatum after the sheriff discovered that she was living with her boyfriend outside of wedlock: get married, move home or find another job.

Carson Smith, the sheriff of Pender county, told Deborah Hobbs, 40, that her decision to cohabit was a moral and a legal issue.

"This is sort of like a double barrel," he told Star-News Wilmington. "It is a violation of general statute, and it goes against something that I believe -- it is a moral issue ... Personally and morally, I think it's best to be married if you're going to be living together."

2. Well, NC, this IS what you voted for!
Moral issue for whom? Certainly not for her. What a dumbass. It is much better if people live together for awhile before getting hitched. Move back "home"? Wherever she resides is "home." Suppose the old folks live in Oregon? Tough commute.

Thanks for reminding me that we are totally screwed.

3. I lived in North Carolina
When my boyfriend and I tried to get an apartment together, we had to lie and wear wedding rings or the landlord wouldn't rent to us. We tried two other places first but were honest about our marital status and were turned away.
Phucked up, no?

4. isn't this illegial?
I think that I would be calling the EEOC. I didn't think that they could fire you for not being married. Someone needs to challenge the general statute.

6. It's a state law.
I think I heard on NPR that the ACLU is going to try to get the statute overturned.

5. Sort of like a double barrel
Yeah Sherrif, Sort of, but probably more like an ignorant fuckwit with a badge and a gun.

What general statute is he citing? Did they pass a Handmaiden's Tale Law in NC?

9. Could be an old law on the books...
Indians can now go to downtown Boston. I guess there was some big local issue there at a time and a law got made. Things settled down, but it never got removed.
