Now 'Jerry Springer - The Opera' is forced to stay off Broadway
By Anthony Barnes, Arts and Media Correspondent

27 February 2005

A Broadway run of the musical Jerry Springer - The Opera has been scrapped in the fallout from a Christian fundamentalist group's campaign against the award-winning show.

edit ...

Jon Thoday, the show's producer, said the financial backer of the New York run had pulled out as a result of developments in the UK. "At the moment it's off ... because of the furore."

The developments have raised concerns that a fringe group can have such a devastating effect on a legitimate stage show, lauded by critics and audiences.

Mainstream Christian groups have distanced themselves from Christian Voice, whose past tactics have included circulating contact details for senior BBC staff - who then received threatening calls.

1. mixed feelings about this
do we really need a Jerry Springer opera?

isn't it bad enough the trash he puts forth as entertainment is on at least once a day in every TV market

but I don't like the fundies' tactics in this--to publish the contact info for BBC staff? that's a stalker or worse just waiting to happen

but since "art" is considered a commodity just like pork bellies and soybeans, the backers of the play do have to take into account financial concerns

2. as much as I hate the Springer show
This might be interesting..I definitely will go to see it..Can you imagine the ability to use parity and tongue and cheeck humor...I suspect a real insight into the human condition..Funny yet, actually extremely poignant is exactly what I suspect.
Another example of the fundies running me out of the country...Guess gotta take a trip to the UK, thanks to Fallwellians...the land of the free...bull S#it.

3. A little more from the article
"It is the latest twist in an extraordinary few days, which has seen Christian Voice - believed to be little more than a "one-man band" led by Stephen Green - pressure a cancer charity into rejecting proceeds from a gala performance of the show in London."

So a small radical group can stop any show they find distasteful? Would that we Pagans could do this to Christmas.

5. I don't watch Springer, but would go see the opera if I could.
I understand that it's very "tongue-in-cheek", and pokes fun at our culture. (The real culture, where the masses are much more interested in getting their 15 minutes of fame on trashy TV than in real news or politics.)

It concerns me that people are caving so easily in the face of "Christian" opposition.
