Two Pithy LTTEs about Theocratic GOP
Edited on Sun May-01-05 08:35 AM by checks-n-balances
'GOP forming an American Taliban'

The national Republican Party is taking the same path as the Texas Republican Party, pandering to extremist zealots. It has cynically formed a coalition with them. President Bush bribes them with faith-based vigorish, and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist last Sunday showed that he is ready to turn the government into the American Taliban just to woo them.

The Republicans are making the same bargain with religious extremists that the Saudis made with the Wahabi: (corporate) aristocracy will continue to live its rarefied existence, while the zealots control the everyday lives of the common people...

---------------------------------------------------------------------

'U.S. on its way to being a theocracy'

We should thank the Republican congressional leaders for disabusing us of the notion that we are a government of the people, by the people and for the people. In reality, we have a government of Republicans, by the neoconservatives and for the religious right — but only the Christian religious right.

While we try to get rid of theocracies in the Middle East, our leaders are building one here. While we try to impose our brand of democracy on the world, we are working tirelessly to deprive our citizens of their rights...

(Two of three letters under "Religion and Politics" heading. Title of third letter: 'Let us pray that voters oust fanatics.')

1. "The majority should not be disenfranchised..." (third ltte)
http://www.ajc.com/news/content/opinion/0405/30letters.html

Let us pray that voters oust fanatics

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Rep. Tom DeLay and company need to reread the Constitution in order to understand that our wonderful government is built on all religious freedom, not merely the Christian-right religion.

Millions of people of faith do not subscribe to their right-wing ideology.

The majority should not be disenfranchised because we do not hold their beliefs.

I pray that these fanatics will be voted out of office in the coming elections.

2. I was trying to limit my post to 4 paragraphs so I didn't include the 3rd
but thanks for including it. Interesting that all letters in that section were in agreement, with no writers in support of the GOP (and it's a 'red state').

Maybe I could have included 4 paragraphs for each letter since they were written by different people, or perhaps the copyright rule doesn't apply to LTTEs.

Can someone set me straight?

3. I don't know the rules explicitly - just thought it would help to put the
third one up. Sorry. :hi:

I'd like to know how the authors of these ltte's come down on other issues and wonder if they're repubs . . .

(I suspect since the letters all come from one url the four paragraph rule would apply.)
