Federal Link to Pure Evangelism
Sunday, October 9, 2005; Page B06

When I read Caryle Murphy's Sept. 29 front-page article about evangelist Luis Palau's DC Festival, I wondered where I had read that name before.

Then I remembered. It was on a link from the federal government's USA Freedom Corps Web site. From that site I clicked on "Volunteers," scrolled down to "faith-based organizations" and typed in my zip code, 20009.

From there I was taken away to a page listing volunteer opportunities, which led to a listing of volunteer slots to help set up the Luis Palau Evangelism Festival, whose stated mission is bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. Is this the sort of volunteer activity the USA Freedom Corps was designed to support?

This seems to be another example of disregard by the Bush administration for the laws governing separation of church and state.

1. Good to see this pointed out in print,
Those DC Festival signs are all over, with no indication that they represent a proselytization fair.

2. Street Spam
They were illegally posted in my fair city, so I took down as many as I could.

4. Northern Virginia
I wish I could tear down the just-as-ugly street spam for the politicians, but they are protected. As ugly as they are, there is no prohibition against, just as there is no prohibition against telemarketing by politicians.
