Porn domain left in limbo

From Kieren McCarthy in Vancouver
Controversial plans to create the Internet domain .xxx purely for
pornography have been dropped just days before they were due to
receive approval.

Vint Cerf, the chairman of the iternet overseeing organisation ICANN,
said yesterday that the issue had been removed from the agenda of an
upcoming ICANN Board meeting due to time constraints. He did not give
an indication of when it might be reintroduced.

The news came as a surprise to everyone, not least Stuart Lawley, the
president of .xxx's sponsoring organisation, ICM Registry, who has
spent millions of dollars getting the bid this far. Mr Lawley was due
to give a presentation on the domain to the same meeting just minutes
after Mr Cerf's statement.
<snip>
Others point to the hard-fought campaign by the Christian right in
the United States, which may have won the ear of the US
administration, which has to approve all ICANN decisions.

1. What Idiocy
Did they really think not having an .xxx would stop pornography? I think it is a great idea. Let us say you don't want internet porno, you don't want your kids - or husband ;-) - visiting those sites. So, you set a block on your browser. But right now the blocks aren't too sophisticated, so your kids may not be able to read about dams built by certain animals because the animal shares a name with a slang term for something else. But if all porno sites had to be .xxx, bam - put your block on that and surf away!

2. Um, the internet is worldwide
How do you control websites outside the US? Wouldn't this just drive adult internet companies offshore?

How about decalring the internet an ADULT space. We don't let kids into bars because it is an adult space. We don't let kids into stripclubs because it is an adult space. Kids don't go into my back room because it is an adult space.

If your kids are surfing the internet without supervision, that is at your (and their) own risk.

Let the kids get their own damn kid safe US government wholesomeness certified internet.

And if you don't want your HUSBAND surfing for porn, I suggest you ask him politely, instead of treating him like a 12yo.

3. The Husband Was A Joke
I don't care if he surfs for adult entertainment or not. As long as he doesn't pay for it.
