Maui Resident Gets Probation for Bomb Scare

On Monday, June 2, an East Boston District Court judge dismissed the Possession of a Hoax Device charge against Maui resident Star Simpson. The charge had been pending against the 20-year-old MIT electrical engineering and computer science student since Sept. 21, 2007, when she caused a bomb scare at Boston’s Logan International Airport by wearing a blinking circuit board attached to her sweatshirt.

The District Attorney’s Office obtained a disorderly conduct complaint, a misdemeanor charge, and recommended pre-trial probation in which Simpson is to complete 50 hours of community service within the next year. When completed, the charge will be dismissed and no further proceedings will be needed.

Simpson apologized for the results of her conduct that day. “Although I never intended to act in a disorderly fashion, I now realize that the shirt I created caused alarm and concern at Logan Airport,” she said. She also expressed appreciation for the diligence of the state’s police in protecting its citizens and apologizes for the expense that was caused that day. Simpson said she designed it as a piece of art.

“As I have stated since the inception of this case, Star Simpson was never guilty of possessing a fake bomb and never had the requisite intent to be found guilty of that crime,” said her attorney, Thomas E. Dwyer Jr.
