What is a "Civil Liberty" as opposed to an ordinary liberty?

What is a "Civil Liberty" as opposed to an ordinary liberty?

The word "civil" in "civil liberty" suggests that it is referring to some specific type of liberty.

I've long wondered what the distinction is between "civil liberties" and other "liberties". I've read a few (conflicting) explanations, but nothing has seemed definitive to me.

Does anybody here want to share their opinion?

1. A civil liberty is freedom from government interference.

You have the right to make DU posts which criticize the government without getting prosecuted for it. That is a civil liberty.

If you are rich, then you also have the freedom to sit by your pool instead of going to work. That is a liberty, but not a civil liberty.

4. If it is freedom from Government Interference
Then why do so many people sue in federal court for a single person violating a single persons civil liberty and the government wasn't even involved other than to provide the court for the trial ?. Confusing I agree.
