Space is big
(reposted from the Lounge)

"Space is big - really big - you just won't believe how vastly, hugely mind-bogglingly big it is. You may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space." - Douglas Adams

A short journey from the earth to the outmost visible part of the universe showing the scale of the universe compared to the size its most fundamental constituents: protons and neutrons:

2. The answer is 42
"Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-eight million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea..."

7. I have seen that before in some documentary..
It is a slap in the face from reality.

"We are, in fact, on the grand scale of things; insignificant carbon life on an insignificant planet in an insignificant galaxy. Does that make life meaningless and depressing? it is quite the opposite. We have been given one chance to live and we all should make the most of it, because when it is over it is really over." - AJFA (at least I think I originated that.)
