Nuclear fusion-fission hybrid system might destroy nuclear waste
Interesting article I received earlier today from the University of Texas newsletter:

Overview:
Physicists at the University have designed a new system that, when fully developed, would use fusion to eliminate most of the transuranic waste produced by nuclear power plants. The invention could help combat global warming by making nuclear power cleaner and thus a more viable replacement of carbon-heavy energy sources, such as coal.

1. I've always wondered if nuclear waste could be recycled
It would seem, after all, that since it's still producing energy, we should be able to harness it. This is good news

2. Hmmmm...sounds hopeful.
Military night be disappointed, tho. They like to make weapons from nuc-u-lar wasty stuff.

4. That is indeed very interesting...
In the future, their could be a nuclear reactor under the hood of some SUV's.

10. No but they could be...
running on power originally generated by a nuclear reactor.

5. as it is now
nuclear power already is a more viable and cleaner form of energy production.

6. Ssshhh. . .

7. True....
the only reservation was the longtime hazardous waste. If that has a new solution, IMO, that completely changes the future of energy production... Nuclear energy has a lot going for it, with waste and safety being the main issues... Showing both issues can be fully addressed is a strong argument for moving toward expansion.

8. It's only cleaner when you ignore the radioactive waste.

9. Well, with system

there would be only 1% of the waste we are generating right now left over. Win/99% Win don't you think?
