Quakes triggered by tides of solid Earth
Study: Earthquake probability enhanced as the moon passed overhead

This high tide is bound to wash away more than just your sand castle. A new study has found that bulges in Earth's crust — solid Earth tides — trigger about 1 percent of earthquakes.

As Earth and the moon grind through their gravitational ballet, our planet gets tugged hard near the equator. The force is so strong that as the moon passes overhead each day, it pulls Earth's surface up 11.8 inches.

Scientists have known about this effect for over a century and have speculated that it might cause earthquakes. Writing in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters, Laurent Metivier of Paris Diderot University in France and a team of researchers now claim they've found a distinct connection between solid Earth tides and earthquakes....>

Astrologers have known this for a looooong time. In our times, Richard Nolle comes immediately to mind.

1. Astrologers have known for a looooong time that the moon's gravity causes solid ground to tide and
cause earthquakes? Really?

6. Yeah, and they've also known that Scorpios tend to press harder when they write with a pen

2. Not wishing to take the piss too much, but...

...Richard Nolle seems to think everything causes earthquakes. And volcanoes.

the January 26 solar eclipse extends all the way to February 2, (D_P: err, wtf?) which means... moderate to severe seismic activity (including magnitude 5+ earthquakes as well as volcanic eruptions)...

...the penumbral lunar eclipse of February 9... moderate to severe earthquake activity (magnitude 5+) or volcanic eruption...

...the Moon’s north declination maximum... moderate to severe earthquake activity (magnitude 5+) or volcanic eruption ...

...in association with the Moon's equatorial crossing on the 6th... Moderate to severe earthquakes (Richter 5 and up) and volcanic eruptions...

...the Moon's maximum south declination on the 13th... moderate to severe seismic activity (including Richter 5+ earthquakes and volcanic eruptions)....

...You can pretty well count on Saturn's transit through Taurus ushering in a period of heavy earthquake activity...

...March 3 new moon looks significant at many levels. Geophysically, it's a signal of ... moderate to severe seismic activity, including Richter 5+ earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

...It’s part of a geocosmic stress window that opens up on the 8th (just ahead of the Moon’s southward crossing of the celestial equator on the 9th), and lasts through the 16th (just a day past the lunar north declination extreme on the 15th). Regulars know what to look for: (D_P: We certainly do! All together now: ) ...increased significant seismic activity (including magnitude 5+ earthquakes and volcanic eruptions).

So, if the moon's in the north, or the south, or crossing the equator, or full, or new, expect magnitude 5 earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. And since the "geocosmic stress windows" seem to last for about a week each, you're pretty much fucked all month, every month.

More lunacy at Google, if you have nothing better to do.

4. "it pulls Earth's surface up 11.8 inches."
I have absolutely no recollection of that from my college geology class years ago. You would think that there would have been some emphasis on it.

Always learning new things on DU... thanks!

5. Yeah it takes a freaking astrology genius to know the moon
has strong effects on the earth..:sarcasm:
Astrology...NOT SCIENCE :banghead:

7. So are there any crystals we can use to counter the effects of the moon?

8. Astrologers! Bwahahahahahahahahaha!
You mean "there is a group of people who think basically everything is connected to the position and movement of things in the sky. How people behave, earthquakes, whatever. As it turns out, the moon, via methods that can't create any other of the effects that astrologers claim, does have an effect. As soon as someone worked out the tides, in fact, people began thinking that it would, but never mind that. Psychics also knew because of their psychic powers!!!!!!"

And don't forget: if science says "Hmmm, I think that could happen but we can't really tell", that counts as them not knowing at all, until they come along and do it more precisely.
