molten toffee burns (sympathy post)
I was making homemade English toffee for my sweetie for valentine's day, when I had one of those weird freak accidents. As I was taking the pot of 300 degree toffee off the burner, still stirring, the spoon and the candy thermometer somehow got tangled together, and the spoon flew out of my hand and flipped towards me. I put up my right hand to keep it from splattering my chest (I was wearing a tank top) with the molten toffee, and splattered all over my right hand instead. Instant blisters, and no amount of aloe in the world would make it better.

I'm bandaged up now, and feeling very sorry for myself.

4. He would if he were here.
He's a few hours away in Monterey, so I won't see him until Friday. He did call to check on me, though. :-)

2. You certainly have my sympathy
Not too long ago I managed to get molten 800 solder on two fingertips. Had to peel it off my skin - and, yes, I left my fingerprints in the solder. Took six weeks to heal. My fingertips are still tender two months after removing the bandages.

Put some plain old yellow mustard on the blisters and leave it to dry. It will take the sting out from the burn. At least that was my experience.

I also got a burn ointment at Walgreen's that worked rather well. It has an antibiotic, a topical pain killer, zinc and vitamins. It's called BurnStuff.

Hope you quit hurting and heal quickly.....

5. Oh, OW!!
Molten solder? :shudder:

Glad you're healing OK--I'm sure I'll be fine, but it sure put a damper on my candy and cookie making plans for the afternoon. And I feel deep gratitude for whoever it was at the Bandaid company who decided to make bandages pre-loaded with antibiotic ointment and a topical painkiller.

9. Hope you hadn't any plans
to be sticking anything in the oven tonight with that hand, either.

10. Nope. I suspended all baking until later in the week.
I'm far too busy feeling sorry for myself right now. :7

13. Ouch! I accidentally set my hand down on the top of a HOT toaster oven...
...just before the holidays, and I still whimper remembering the pain. That "BurnStuff" ointment is very good as a topical anaesthetic, but the thing that did the trick for me was a "liquid bandage" called Second Skin Moist Burn Pads. Those things are bloody miraculous, it's the first time I've ever had a serious burn heal without terrible blistering and scarring.

sympathetically,
Bright

17. A lot of professional chefs get their scars tattooed...
... with the date and the cause.

I'm not one of them.

Sorry about you toffee burn!!!

I've only had one small boiling sugar accident. One drop on my hand.

But, damn! It hurt!

Next time, stick your hand in ice immediately.
