Trader Joe's to discontinue carrying King Arthur flour...
Edited on Tue Mar-03-09 09:21 PM by housewolf
This announcement came in an email from KA today...

Boo-hoo!!!! This is sad news! I've relied on Trader Joe's for my KA flour for 10 years now or so.

It's available at a number of supermarkets here, but at a price about $2 per 5-lb bag higher.

Drat! Drat! Drat!!!!!!

:grr:

1. Have you ever compared TJ's prices with the KA website shop?
Just wondering if it might be economical to order online...

5. It's the shipping from Vermont to Oregon that's the kicker...
Bob's Red Mill is local... it's a bit of a drive but maybe I'll try working with their flour a bit and see how I like it.

9. They do run shipping discounts pretty regularly.
You can sign up for their email newsletters and get sales info, recipes etc.

I love the Bob's Red Mill flours. I can only get their smaller packaged stuff like the dark rye here, but it's excellent.

2. Sunflower Market picked it up here
and Whole Paycheck also carries it.

I'll pay the premium. I love the stuff.

3. Did they say why?
Write them and tell them how unhappy you are about this. You won't be the only one, I'm sure. Maybe if they get enough letters of displeasure they might change their mind.

4. It said that the decision was in line with TJ's desire to focus on its own brands
They were the first outlet for KA flours in the west about 10 years ago, but now it's availability is pretty wide, implying that TJ doesn't have such a corner of the market and wants to move on to other things. Maybe TJ's will be offering their own brand of flour... who knows? Or maybe they think flour isn't such a good money-maker? I'm just guessing, but maybe we'll see something from TJ's about it in the near future.

7. That is awful news for me.
It will be very expense for me now. Buying the 5 lb bags via mail order won't work unless they waive the S & H.

10. Time to make friends with a baker or someone that can get you into
one of the food suppliers to restaurants and bakeries. Start buying your flour in 50# bags ;)
I have some friends that run a small cafe and they have offered to take me to a food supplier they use that is only open to owners of food establishments. That was for chocolate I needed to make truffles. I ended up mail-ordering it from KA :D

You can freeze your flour if you don't already do so. And if you don't have the freezer space, perhaps a small chest freezer just for your baking supplies would be in order :)
