Debbie Meyers bags
DM offers bags for cold cuts, cheese and bread. Don't bother with them, they're just colored zip lock bags.

The green bags seem to work well, but the others are a waste of time as far as I can tell.

1. I didn't like the green bags.
Put some bananas in one as she demonstrates. The bananas started to "sweat." What the green bags ended up doing was making them rot. These bags are useless.

2. I had the same experience with bananas--quick rot! But they
do work well for keeping vegetables and fruits fresh for longer periods of time in the refrigerator. Just don't use a twist tie with them.

4. the green bags work pretty well for some but not all veggies.
Bananas continue to ripen even if they change color more slowly. Green beans seem to go south faster than normal. Lettuce, carrots, cabbage last almost indefinitely. Other veggies survive with varying success.

6. I do pretty well with the bananas in those bags, just...
NEVER close them up and watch out for ambient humidity-- if it's really humid, nothing works.

3. I have an article at home
Edited on Thu Mar-12-09 11:06 AM by hippywife
from Vegetarian Times that tells how to store veggies (whether in the fridge or on the counter) and which ones to keep away from each other during storage. I'll pull it out when I get home and post some of the details. That should help rather than wasting money and resources on any kind of bags.

5. I found something that works really well for meats
Edited on Thu Mar-12-09 12:19 PM by Lucinda
Put one package of meat, in its store wrapper, inside one grocery store plastic bag and fold the open ends under the meat package. You just want a loose covering, nothing too tight.

It extends the life of meats considerably. And you can just wash an reuse the bags.

9. Loose covering.
No, you do not want a loose covering. Air gets in and then you have freezer-burn.

Either vacuum pack or wrap tightly in Reynold's wrap.

7. I forgot about posting this info as I promised
the other day. This is from the April 2006 Vegetarian Times about storing fruits and veggies.

Refrigerate these gas releasers:
Apples
Apricots
Cantaloupe
Figs
Honeydew

Don't refrigerate these gas releasers:
Avocados
Bananas, unripe
Nectarines
Peaches
Pears
Plums
Tomatoes

Keep these away from gas releasers:
Bananas, ripe
Broccoli
Brussels sprouts
Cabbage
Carrots
Cauliflower
Cucumbers
Eggplant
Lettuce and other leafy greens
Parsley
Peas
Peppers
Squash
Sweet potatoes
Watermelon

They also tested the bags, the E.G.G., the FridgeSmart lettuce crisper by Tupperware, and the Extralife disk. The E.G.G. and the Tupperware did a better job of keeping things fresher longer and the disk came in second.

8. Just curious, hippywife,,,
I know you don't do plastic so much. I love my foodsaver and containers which is pretty much all plastic.

How do you store fruits and vegies?

I can keep fresh mushrooms, spring onions, celery etc. refrigerated for at least a month in foodsaver containers (not bags).

I also bought some glass canning jars to keep dry goods fresh. Foodsaver has lids to vacuum those jars.

10. I just throw everything in the fridge
some of it in the crisper drawers and other stuff just out on the shelves. I'm finding a lot of things stay good out on the shelves longer than they do in the drawers.

11. I came over to post about these since I got a box of them today
I found them at King Soopers on sale.

Hubby and I just transferred all our veggies and some fruits into the bags according to instructions. It's more arid here in Colorado, so we'll see how it goes.

I'm hoping for good luck especially with bananas, cucumbers and lettuce. They go bad more quickly than the rest.

12. I've tried everything, including those damn
Debbie Meyers bags, and haven't been impressed. Some stuff stays a long time, other things, pffffffft. Maybe I did it wrong, or something, but I had just as much luck with plastic bags, leaving them partially open in the crisper drawers.

Bu, tomorrow afternoon, this big baby will be delivered, and one of the things that sold me on it is the adjustable temperature settings for the crisper drawers:

14. Nice...
We got a new fridge a while back with top fridge and two freezer drawers below. AFAIC, there's no going back. My poor old knees love not having to struggle any more helping me clean my fridge. I just reach in and wipe while standing up straight or just remove a shelf for a wash in the sink.

I don't know if you've had this kind of fridge before. If you haven't, you will love it and even want to give it a kiss goodnight.
