OMG, I'm an idiot
:banghead:

I rinsed out my DescoWare (precursor to LaCrusette) bean pot and put it on the stove over a flame to dry out the cast iron bottom

got on hold for the unemployment office for 112 minutes (that's not a typo, I was on hold for almost two hours!)

wandered back into the kitchen, flame was still on

gack!!

it's ok, and i'm ok but you can be sure I won't touch that puppy for a few hours

here's a pic of my little bean pot, perfect for my every other day Ain5 baking...

1. Hey!
Don't you be calling my friend an idiot!

We've all done that before, maybe not for that long, tho. Glad you didn't ruin your cookware or burn down the house. :hi:

6. I made my latest with
1 c semolina
1.5 c bread flour
1 cup whole wheat
3 c APF

and added an extra 1/2 cup water. It tastes really good and has a nice open crumb but I'm still not getting it to rise very well. It was too much extra water, I think.

11. I haven't had problems
with that first 2 hour rise. It's been when I take a handful out of the fridge to bake for dinner that it wasn't rising well. It just flattened out as it warmed up. That's why I think it was too wet this time.

than the APF batches

hmmmmm

we'll see.

It's my 8th generation on this batch, the flavor is amazing!

2. Whoa!
This is why I - the one who verges on the edges of senility every day - link turning on a burner or an oven with picking up a timer, setting it, and carrying it with me wherever I go next.

I am so glad you're all right, and how tough is that pot to have survived almost TWO HOURS over that flame!!!

One hundred and twelve minutes? Isn't there a law against that sort of thing? If you were on a wireless phone, your battery might have died. That really bites.

When you realized what you'd done, did you feel like this?

3. I'm just glad it wasn't one of the stainless
thank Dog for cast iron

and I had one silly little question about my UI, did I need to do anything else other than certify online that I was back to work?

112 minutes

for one little question. and believe me, I scoured that website for the first 35 or 40 minutes for the answer

sigh

7. Stainless........
You might have been looking for a new stove.

So, did you have to do anything else besides the online certification? I hope the answer was "Yes," because if it was "No," I'm gonna break down crying.....................

9. no, the lastest cert I did on Sunday was all I needed to do
but I didn't want to screw up my UI as I am furloughed at least one month a year so I'll be back in 11.5 months

14. I have some REALLLLLY old LaCrusette
Edited on Fri Mar-13-09 02:06 AM by troubleinwinter
well more than 50 yrs old, belonged to my grandfather, who was a German/American baker.

Two of the pieces have 20+ year old small chips missing in the center bottom, exposing the cast iron. Makes no difference whatever. I think there musta been a similar event to yours some years ago with my mother burning it.... I don't know. Never has been any further chipping. I just watch out for rust like in a cast iron pan.

The edges are worn of enamel, too.

Perhaps the stove heat isn't as hot as the enamel firing heat, anyway.

So even if it should chip, no huge deal.

Are the lid tops ceramic?

16. I trashed my little Le Creuset the other night

Normally I'm so aware of what I've got cooking, and the timing and everything, but this time it was for my son (meaning, not me), just Mac & Cheese which he wanted, I got involved in a phone call, and totally forgot I had the thing on, and trashed my poor little Le Creuset.

I was going to give it a proper burial, but ended up putting it in the recycling bin.

I don't do that often, but it's sad when something like that goes. It's like a member of the family. That little Le Creuset has been with me for longer than some of my dogs (one of whom, who shall remain nameless, may not have much time left on this mortal coil anyway, but that's a separate thread...)
