2. Some really inventive ideas in that thread.
Seriously, I know a guy who uses the dishwasher for his cast iron. I gasped when I saw what he had done to it. There are still a few pieces of the old patina on the outside, but they are flaking off. The inside is completely bare and dry looking. When I asked him about it he said that the traditional cleaning method "took too long".

Another cast iron story: I found two skillets that had been left out in the rain and weather for months. They were both heavily rusted and in terrible shape. I worked on those skillets off and on for a couple of weeks with various scrubbers trying to remove the rust and wound up using sandpaper to get it all cleaned off. I just knew that they were ruined beyond repair, but after finally getting them clean I used my tried and true method of heating and coating with vegetable shortening to season them. It took more than one application, but now both of them have acquired a nice patina again and are stick proof.

4. Oh no!
Some people are not deserving of the joy of owning cast iron cookware. That's it. I am going to start a movement for the protection of abused and neglected cast iron.

5. I finally got it clean
It took Ajax, a brillo pad and lots of elbow grease.

7. You might want to put a coat of clear enamel on it so it stays clean.
Or, get out the wire-wheel brush, a buffing pad and a stick of jeweler's rouge and polish it up all nice and shiny. Then coat in hard clear enamel
