Not "used meat" but bread products...

If you pay close attention, you'll see that bread products - from loafs of bread to packs of hamburger rolls - all have either a colored tie or a plastic tag holding the bag together.

What you may not notice, unless you pay REALLY close attention, is that they are color-coded. Not that there's (as far as I can tell) any industry standard, but bread from one set of baking has a certain color tag or tie (let's say "white") - bread baked in another batch with a different expiration date has a different tag (let's say "blue").

So if you're digging through the bread collection and are looking for the "newest" (freshest) release of bread, just look for one of each color. All the ones with the same colored tag will have the same expiration date. What you want to do is find a different colored tag or tie, and check the date on that.

2. Old bread is great stuff

and I used to get it from the old bread store to turn into croutons, bread crumbs, bread puddings, pain perdu, and all sorts of other things that fresh bread doesn't do very well.

Old balloon bread isn't useful for much of anything, alas. Stick to the specialty breads and you'll do much better.

3. I just was referring to daily bread

wheat bread, white bread, rye, burger or hot dog rolls, whatever.

Years ago I would check each trying to find the date when I finally noticed the ones with different dates had different color ties. It's not a practice by local bakeries, but for any major manufacturer of bread products they all seem to follow the practice (I don't know if there's any formal color scheme - I haven't worked that hard to figure that part out - but I do know that they all seem to use different ties on different batches - which makes sense if you think about it. Makes it easier for them and their distributors too. Put the greens in back, move the reds and then the white's forward - so they can rotate their stock easily.

I'm transferring my case to another cancer center. The one I'm at doesn't have their communication act together, although I assume the individual docs are all excellent, but now now I have apparently another life-threatening condition over and above the cancer that I'm just finding about now.

C&B is pretty much one of my very small handfuls of mental refuges.

5. I'm planning to go up to the Oroweat store today

So I'll check the closures. I think they use plastic tabs but I never paid much attention to the color. I think most are white. But I bet I'll be surprised when I check them closely. Thanks!

edit: I have been carrying a little card around in my wallet for years with that code on it (and usually forget to even look) - I have no idea where I got it, but Snopes says yes they use colors but different manufacturers use different codes. http://www.snopes.com/food/prepare/breadtag.asp
