Deliberating - whole sirloin roast is on sale...
It seems like a remarkable deal, $1.99/lb - but the thing is HUGE! Like 15lbs. Although the butcher did say he would cut it up for me.

I was thinking if it were cut into 3 pieces, they would make good cuts for slow roasting for roast beef. Yes?

Should I go for it?

2. That's what I thought too

They have a limit of 1 per person - plus I just don't think I have enough freezer space for more than one. Plus, money is tight, so while this seems like an extravagent purchase, it's actually a good value, imho.

The beef from this particular store is always really good though (it's not a large chain).

I got a smaller cut yesterday, it was about a 3 pounder, for $2.99/lb - still a great deal, but the other one is so tempting... the sale goes til Tuesday.

Here's a link, in case anyone has this store near them (Raley's - not sure if it's just a CA store or not)

3. It must be Cheap Meats Week
Our Safeway has closely trimmed bone-in rib roasts for $3.99. Even a moron like me can cut them into gorgeous rib eye steaks. I'm guessing there are six really nice steaks in one roast.

4. You just gave me a great idea ............
Our Giant has semi-boneless beef rib roasts on sale for $4.99. I was looking at them, wishing I could think of something to do with them. Your post was just what I was looking for - they're 4th-7th rib, so there should be some nice steaks there for a very good price.

Thanks for waking up my slumbering brain. And kudos on the zinfandel. I'm gonna look for it ...............

5. First, you can beat the "1 per person" thing -
you just go in the store twice. Or go two different days. You've got 'til Tuesday.

But, even with money tight and freezer space iffy, that's such a fabulous price - will we ever see a price like that again? - I'd make room for it in my budget and my freezer. And, thanks for the link, but the best I can do at my local market is $4.99 for a partial-bone rib roast.

Good luck, and let us know what you end up doing.

Whole Top Sirloin. Sold in the bag. Avg. weight 12 to 14 lbs.

This is odd - "Sold in the bag" - guess you'll just have to see it in person. Maybe it's frozen. Great price though - hope you get a good deal :hi:

7. Yes, that one. I did see it - it's in those big bags like at Costco
like how they sell really really big pieces. Not frozen.

I'm going to cook the 3lb one tomorrow - and depending on how exciting that is, I'll probably go get one of these.

8. Top Sirloin?
Oh, that's nice eating. Very nice. We called them "family steaks" when I lived in SW Ohio.

Here's a pretty good site you might find interesting: http://www.steaks-guide.com/article-pages/recipes/top_sirloin_steak_recipes.htm

Happy eating!

10. Thanks for the link, I'll check that out
The thing is, when I went to the store I was going to get an eye round roast, and do it like they do on America's Test Kitchen - because I've tried many many ATK recipes and not once have I been disappointed. So I was going to do their "roast beef" recipe - rub with a few teaspoons of kosher salt, into fridge overnight; then brown all sides (put some oil and ground pepper onto roast first) then slow (225 degree) oven with temp probe inserted, set to beep at 115 degrees - then turn off oven, reset probe and leave in oven until it reaches 130 internal temp. Then rest for 15 mins.

But they didn't have the eye round, but did have the sirloin, which is what I got (the 3lb version)

I want it to be like roast beef, so I can thinly slice leftovers for sandwiches (lol - that's the whole motivation)

9. If you've got a freezer and plan to eat it all in a couple of months
then sure.

Or you could do two roasts, some steaks, and grind the rest at home for hamburger.

My score this week was 4 pounds of frozen US farmed tiger prawns at Costco.

11. I scored a 6-lb hunk of filet mignon for $3.99/lb
at the local Sun Harvest 100% Natural beef. Cut it up into 14 nice filets and a 1-lb chunk. Kept 4 out and froze the rest. That's the way I pretty much buy all my meat now-whatever's on sale. Take it home and cut it up the way I want it. 30 years ago someone gave me Merle Ellis's book "Cutting Up In The Kitchen" and it's saved me a bundle. With a good sharp knife you can buy the cheaper cuts and turn them into the high dollar cuts with assorted other pieces for stews, hamburger, etc.

12. Verdict is in - I'm going to go get one tomorrow
and possibly another on Tuesday!

It was amazing roast beef! I did it exactly like the ATK recipe. It turned out rare, but just fine.

Can't wait for sandwiches tomorrow. Bread is in the oven now...
