Need help removing adware, spyware, etc.

My wife got something on her computer that does not allow us to go to her homepage right away but redirects us to a page that urges us to download software to get rid of a worm, It doesn't say that we have the worm, it just says that we are in danger. Does any one know any cheap or free reliable downloadable ways of getting rid of this? We just got socked with a new property tax assessment and money for a fix is hard to find. The computer still works but the pop-ups are very annoying. We are going out so I can't respond right away but I will answer all of your posts when we get back in a couple of hours. Thanks a lot!
