Hello all - non-techie here trying to install ethernet card for DSL
and having difficulty.
The ethernet card seemed to install with no problems; fit right into slot and PC cover back on, no worries. But when I installed the driver via the included CD, I get a message "The device will not start (error 10)"
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, but no luck. I disconnected the phone cord from the DSL modem and put it back in the dial-up so I could get online and see if I could figure out what the hell is wrong -
I did call Best Buy where I bought the card and talked to a Geek dude for just long enough for him to try to convince me to bring the whole shebang into town and let them install it for $49.99...

Any clues as to what might be wrong? Bad hardware/software? Or bad install??
Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks much!

1. I'm no techy but
just for fun. If it fits in a different slot try that. I got lucky like that once. Make sure you fully shut off computer each time you reboot.

Like I said.. if no techy has a real answer, thats's what I'd do :)

Good luck.

:hi:

3. Could be a driver issue
Edited on Thu Mar-27-08 03:09 PM by Hokie
Since you can get to the web check for the latest driver for the card. Also make sure you installed the proper driver for the version of your operating system. Many drivers that work on Win 98 will not work on 2000 or XP and vice versa.

Here is a link to the Microsoft KB Article on Error Code 10 in Device Manager:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943104/

"Typical Code 10 error issues
The Code 10 error pertains mainly to hardware issues and to compatibility issues between hardware and software. Therefore, we recommend that you troubleshoot these issues by focusing on device drivers, on device configuration issues, and on hardware compatibility issues"

4. Hey thanks - I did get it; I tried a different slot, and I don't think the card
was seated properly anyway in the first one, but when I put it in the next slot down, and got it pushed in all the way, it worked just fine :-)
Thanks for responding!
