Can anybody recommend good anti-virus software other than Norton?
I'm a bit sick of Norton - when things go wrong, there's a total
lack of support. They ignore online queries, and charge the earth
for phone calls - including the time you wait on the other end to
get through.

I've had them, but I'm not sure if others are any good. Would like
to hear some personal recommendations.

1. avast!
Free avast! 4 Home Edition

They have support FAQ and a forum (though I've never had to use them).

2. As a Tech and all that stuff, I recommend "Nod32"
They are THE best company I've ever dealt with....their anti-virus
updates every time you turn your computer on...it's rated one of the best in the world (if not the best) and most importantly, I've NEVER heard of it getting in the way of any program or "messing up" any program. It's 39.95.

I used some of the Free anti-virus for awhile but found that they tend to miss some of the new stuff that has been going around.
I can truly say that I've never had a program that works as well as Nod32. It can be found here>>>.

3. Try PandaScan online - FREE
One of my clients said they use this for all their computers now, as it detected problems Norton did not...

AntiVir http://www.majorgeeks.com/download955.html

One of the MANY problems we as consumers have when buying a computer off the shelf is that it comes loaded with garbage. Garbage like Internet Explorer, AOL and of course the free trial version of Norton.

Norton is a invasive resource Hog and after your free trial you begin to pay in more ways than one.
Unless you know how to uninstall Norton and break free from it's grip you will soon become a computer tech just trying to keep your computer running the way it should.
Just surf the computer help forums and you will see thousands of problems with Norton. There are many free programs out both Anti-Virus and Firewalls that do a great job. I will never again have ANY Symantec programs on my machine.

7. I have the payware version of AVG
It's excellent and doesn't have a large footprint in memory.

9. Thank you for all the suggestions.
I'm checking them all out - many I'd never heard of, and I'm so
glad to know there are so many alternatives to Norton.

10. I'm trying out AVG to see how it goes,
but I think NOD.32 looks very impressive, and may end up with that,
but it's the most expensive, so I'll see how AVG goes.

Thanks for the helpful advice from everyone.

11. Installed AVG on my work and home computers.
Nothing came up at work on the initial scan, but at home it detected
7 Trojan Horse viruses that Norton had missed. Amazing!
