1. The common sentiment here is to ditch Norton

which is not an easy thing to do. You can google for "Norton Removal Tool" which may or may not do the job properly. Revo uninstaller will probably get rid of the last rotten, decaying remnants that have lodged in your system. http://www.revouninstaller.com/

There are numerous free and reliable tools to keep your PC clean:

Avast or AVG anti-virus. (my preference is Avast)
NoScript add-on for Firefox
Malwarebytes Anti malware
Spybot

2. Revo uninstaller should run first.

It will use whatever uninstall program is available for the application. The advanced option goes deep into the registry to get all the entries.

The problem I had when uninstalling AVG, was that it had been removed from one part of the registry, but not another; and therefore wasn't showing up in Control Panel/Add Remove Programs, or by the AVG uninstaller. But Revo found it, and took care of it.
