Something has gone haywire (videos)
Where videos are embedded into webpages, I very often get this:

(actual page: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x288130)

If I click on the link to YouTube, I can watch the video there, but on other sites, a link is not given, so I cannot see the vid.

A couple of days ago, I got a popup to update somethingorother & clicked. I thought it did relate to a sort of vid player thing.

Seems I need to download something?

Thanks, all!

1. Looks like a problem with Adobe Flash.
First go get the Flash uninstaller: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=1
Close all browser windows, run that, restart a new browser session.
Go and download the latest Flash: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Reboot just to be on the safe side.

Then see if they work again!

3. Excellent
This is worrying, though:

You shouldn't ever click OK to a prompt you're not sure about. It can cause nightmares like getting your system hosed and having your private information stolen.

5. Yes,
I am aware of that. It was such a familiar program, that I just went ahead without thinking. As soon as I OKed it, I knew it was a HUGELY STUPID move.

Not sure if that is what caused the problem, but I think it likely was. I have run some various scans since, all seems OK.

Your caution is absolutely correct. :dunce:

6. Great!
I wasn't sure if you knew. Putting up a browser prompt is probably the most reliable way to infect a computer nowadays, which is why they're seen so often. A little consistent wariness can prevent a mountain of headaches.

4. Glad it worked!
There are just so many add-ins and things on top of web browsers now that it's just a matter of time before something gets out of sync or has its toes stepped on, so to speak. You are very welcome.
