can't seem to remove with standard removal program in my control panel. Is there something more I need to do?

1. Revo Uninstaller
http://www.revouninstaller.com/

Revo Uninstaller helps you to uninstall software and remove unwanted programs installed on your computer even if you have problems uninstalling and cannot uninstall them from "Windows Add or Remove Programs" control panel applet.

Revo Uninstaller is a much faster and more powerful alternative to "Windows Add or Remove Programs" applet!

3. I can't comment specific to McAfee..
but I've seen instances where the registry entries are corrupted in some way, and as a result the usual uninstall is ineffective.

4. Because it's broken ...

Actually, the Windows Uninstaller is only as good as the people implementing it. That is, Windows provides a convenient method for 3rd party software developers to allow for uninstallation of their software, but this seems to be the project most companies give to the new hires who work out of a basement with no lighting and no information at all about what the software even does.

IOW, the applications a lot of software developers write for their software don't work properly, which in many cases comes across as intentional.

The Revo Uninstaller does what the Windows Install/Remove could do if developers used it properly.
