Is Adaware still a good product?
I have 2008 version and it drives me nuts - the updates never work right - always takes two or three tries and then forever to load (slow dial-up, but still...it used to work!)

I'm going to try a different antivirus (currently avg, may go to avira or avast)- what about this?
I never see recommendations for it anymore.

1. I have been using Ad-aware SE

But a few days ago there was a message on LavaSoft's website advising that SE will no longer be supported as of March 31. I had been using it for years. I don't think I need it so much now anyhow because my A/V suite does just about the same thing Ad-aware SE does. Check your A/V software. It might be a duplication of effort on your machine as well.

2. I gave up on it a year or so back
Too hard to get updates etc.

There are other measures you can take to keep the advertising spam off your computer. If you use Firefox, get the add-ons AdBlock Plus and NoScript.

I also use MVP hosts file. http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm There are instructions on the page and, I think in the zip file. It's not difficult.

Then a regular clean up with CCleaner and/or Spybot to rid yourself of cookies etc

3. My anti-malware of choice
is currently Malwarebytes. It catches things Spybot doesn't. I quit adaware awhile ago, I think because Spybot was the better of the two. I had the same problem with updates, and even Spybot works better with a clean install. I still have Spybot, but am most impressed with Malwarebytes.

I really like Avira, but just found out it doesn't scan email. Gmail scans, so for now, I'm okay, but plan to test Avast and/or Comodo. I just don't like AVs that watchdog my registry to the degree I hear Comodo (?) does. Avira has SOME registry protection. If you use a Microsoft email client, it may not be for you. (I don't know what kind of security Thunderbird has). Avira updates quickly and cleanly.

My top pick for pure computer performance enhancement of late has been Revo uninstaller. It isn't security. It's for performance and tidy PC innards.
