I need some help with book recommendations, please
Hi guys. I'm putting together a web page for our rescue group that will be a reading list of dog and cat-related books. The books will be all kinds, from training guides, to fiction, to fun stuff such as agility. Do you guys have any suggestions for what I need to be adding? I don't have the page on our website yet. it will probably be next week before it's up. So any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

22. How to be Your Dog's Best Friend
I recommend this book too. When I got my first dog, the breeder recommended it. It really is good at explaining a good way to house train the dog.

I had a few of them, Culture Clash, Dog Whisperer, but there are a lot there that I didn't have.

11. His petfinder hits are up but we still need a pic with him and pups
That might help. We also changed one of our adoption locations to a much busier store so that might help. We now adopt out of two of the busiest PetsMarts in the Raleigh area.

12. Good job on the new PetsMart locations! And...
although you will probably never read my posts again ->

I think you ought steer clear of the name "BooBoo" in future. It sounds bad as in:
"Boo, hiss, boo!" or
"He is a boo-boo - a mistake" or
"Look he's pooped on the floor - a booboo" or
"Look he's emptied the trashcan all over the floor"

If there are some pet names that are particularly popular in your area - just use those over and over again - the pet's new family will rename them something unique anyway.

I hope the pics with puppies work for Boo -- I am glad to hear that his PetFinder hits are up!

:hi:

18. lol. That's ok. It wasn't my choice
The women in the group named him BooBoo because they are always calling him Boo Boo baby and stuff like that.

I would rather he be named Spot.

He's a good dog, but it's going to take a home with an experienced dog person to keep him in line. He's easily bored.

5. Marley & Me : Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog
I just finished it. It's a memoir about a really sweet but less than perfect dog.

7. Where the Red Fern Grows
A classic book but great reading for animal lovers. I read it as a child and still vividly remember it to this day.

9. "Getting started: clicker training for dogs/ cats"
available at www.clickertraining.com and some pet stores. "Click for joy" is another good one.

19. I honestly didn't know you could clicker train cats
I've never had a cat. I've learned a lot about them since I've started working with the rescue and I'm impressed with their intelligence. I had just never thought about the need to train a cat.

Thanks for the tip. I don't have a lot of cat recommendations yet.

20. You can't clicker-train cats............
The first time you click, the cat gets curious. After that, they ignore you.

In our household, the cats train us. They probably even have a name for their training techniques.

24. Mine are clicker trained
they love it. They really enjoy the "game' of trying to figure out what behavior is wanted to get the treat. I clicker trained oberon, my Maine Coon, to come when called, sit up, jump on and off of furniture and give a high five-all in less than three weeks!

25. It's easy, as long as your cat loves treats
and is somewhat curious. Mine do an assortment of "tricks"; Obie's favorite is "giving a high five"; now he simply holds one paw high in the air instead of meowing when he's hungry. It makes the house much more peaceful.

15. Thanks. I have very few cat recommendations
My S/O is allergic to cats and I really don't know much about them. I need to learn, though. We adopt almost as many cats as dogs.

Thanks again.

21. Then don't forget the Cleveland Amory books about PB
PB=Polar Bear. There are 3 in the series - the first is "The Cat Who Came For Christmas"

You probably know he was a longtime animal activist. He wrote a book about the ranch he founded to save wild burros rescued from the Grand Canyon (?)but now has all sorts of animals - Black Beauty Ranch.

14. I've got the Hidden Life of Dogs
It's a great book. Can't remember the author either but it's a great insight into pack mentality and dynamics.

Thanks for all the recommendations. the Souls of Animals sounds interesting.

16. Susan Conant's series of murder mysteries
Edited on Sat Feb-11-06 08:15 PM by ajacobson
with Holly Winter and her malamutes. I like her earlier books more than her later ones. The books are set in and around the dog show scene. One book, Black Ribbon, takes place at a summer dog training camp, it's great.
