What the hell is my cat doing?
In the past few weeks, she's spending more and more time perched on the side of the kitchen sink, intently peering down the garbage disposal. I keep expecting a tentacle to come up out of there

Why do they do this (and don't say "because they're cats")

3. Probably attracted by the scent of some food that you put in there
A little baking soda in the disposer should get rid of it. Or maybe not, if she is providing entertainment!!

5. She has seen food go down there....
she must be waiting for whatever you are cooking down there to come back out!

6. She's 8, and has always lived in the same place!
No new smells there, no new process - why the sudden facination?

(but we'll try the baking soda anywayO)

7. Rather than scent, what about sound?
If your pipes haven't been cleaned in a while, couldn't the sound of water drainage be different?

8. There might be a mouse lurking in the drainpipe
Your cat hears something ultrasonic coming out of the drainpipe you can't pick up. Cats' hearing is 20 times as acute as humans', and they can hear ultrasound. Could be a mouse; mice have been known to sneak into drainpipes.

10. Maybe she wants to play with rubber ducks.

My older cat Mojo loves to sit by the bathroom sink and stare at it (and then at me when I walk by) until I put water in it. Then she pushes one of her ever-growing family of rubber ducks in the water and splashes them around. My kitten (six months old) now likes to do this too.

Sorry the quality of the photo isn't better btw, it's a photo from a couple of years ago (pre-digital days) that I had to scan first.
