My relationship to money: Anybody got any reading or other
suggestions on how to change ones' mind about money? It seems I almost always live with a "poverty" or "not enough" mind set, regardless of how much money I make. I just don't know how to get out of it, and change my mind set.

I'm not talking about suddenly being able to have scads of money fall into my life; I am talking about having a healthier relationship with it.

Has anyone here been able to change their mind set about money from a negative to a positive?

Any suggestions would be gratefully welcomed.

Thanks!

1. I'm right there with you, SG

Sucks, doesn't it? x(

I'm afraid I don't have any answers, as I'm like you, but I will eagerly follow this thread to learn more when others share their thoughts.

I have this terrible habit of allowing my situation to get truly dire--scraping the bottom of the barrel kind of thing--and then bouncing back, and then starting the cycle all over again. VERY unhealthy. However, I have noticed that when I convince myself to STOP fretting and ask the universe for help, money comes in from the unlikeliest places.

For instance, at the end of the most recent downturn (bouncing checks and all), out of the blue my aunt gave me a $50 gift card for the local malls (worked at any shop in any mall) because it was due to expire before she'd have any need to buy anything, AND I finally got my $50 rebate for buying a new phone (which I did back in April!)--that came in the form of a $50 Visa card. So MG Jr. and I ran errands all day on Thursday and never spent a dime in cash.

Stuff like that is fun, but like you, I'd rather establish a healthier relationship instead of the drama of feast or famine.

8. Same here, MG. I let things get really dire, bounce back, then
start all over again.

I don't need a gazillion dollars; I just want to have a steadier, more healthy relationship with money.

This yo-yo thing I do is not good for me. :)

2. I know it's when I starting seeing
money as energy and either negative or positive feelings can be attached to it. Mine was of course negative. I'm certainly not monetarily rich by any means, there is always enough now that I view it as neutral energy that needs to flow, as all energy does. If it does not come as paper when I need it, gain emerges during the process in that situation.

Allow it to work for you as energy if not positive then neutral. When that works once or twice, there's no turning back to feeling it as negative, IMHO  :)

9. Thanks.
I know that one of the things I do that isn't so positive is I start to feel panicked about money, and I know that's not the kind of energy that should be attached to it if I want my relationship to it to be positive.

17. Yeah, it's a real fight doing battle with programming.
But you are stronger than the program. You have the right and the will to believe and have better experiences with money. :)

3. Check out Suze Orman
She's written a lot of books and I believe all of them delve in to the psychology of our feelings towards money. She will always point out that she is not a psychologist, but I feel she has some thoughts that are interesting to review.

I would suggest working on your beliefs. You are worthy of abundance.

Here is a small article she wrote regarding her book, The Courage to be Rich.

10. Wow, that was a great article! The part about guilt and money
really struck me. It's definitely something I need to make myself more aware of, so I can let go of that guilt (in my case, feeling guilty for not having enough money).

Thanks for linking to that.

4. Here's something interesting I learned yesterday
Edited on Sun Aug-08-10 10:26 AM by Flying Dream Blues
in my first day of hypnotherapy training...I found it fascinating and it may be something you want to consider.

"Although your conscious mind may seem to call the shots, it is ruled by the desires of the subconscious, which is the real you. <> Although we have free will to do anything we want to do, we base our decisions on the strengths of our desires. And subconscious desires always outweigh conscious ones."

"Our subconscious acts the way it has been programmed to act, exactly as a computer does, and much of this programming occurs before we are able to discriminate between ideas helpful or detrimental to our welfare." From the book, Self Hypnosis and Other Mind-Expanding Techniques by Charles Tebbets.

So, if in some way your subconscious has been programmed for poverty, all of your conscious efforts to bring yourself out of it would be undermined by your subconscious. In a battle between your conscious desire for change and your subconscious, the subconscious will usually eventually win out. This is why we start out with great intentions with our New Year's Resolutions, and it works for awhile, but most of us have trouble sticking with it because subconsciously, we are at odds with the change.

So the key is to reprogram the subconscious, and the easiest and quickest way to do this is with hypnosis or self-hypnosis.
I'm in an intensive class to become a hypnotherapist for the next month and will be giving this a shot myself...the problem is deciding which of many things to deprogram! :)

This book gives a good explanation of how it all works, as well as really easy to follow instructions on self-hypnosis if you're interested. I hear your frustration and am right there with you in many areas of my own life. The idea that we can change this so easily by getting into our subconscious mind is exciting and appealing to me. I wish you all the best, Seattle Girl and hope things change for you soon.
:hi:
xoxo
Edited: left out an important sentence! :)

5. Wow, thanks for this, FDB
It makes a LOT of sense. In my case, I'm a child of parents who grew up during the Depression, and my mom especially carries all the baggage that that entails. I was taught to be PAINFULLY frugal and to deny myself just about everything. No indulgent purchases allowed. On one hand, it helped me keep my head above water when I was young and inclined to spend what little money I had; on the other hand, it's done terrible things to my psyche. Over the past decade or so I've learned to UNlearn a lot of the binding frugality, so I'm freed up somewhat (and now my mom's penny-pinching ways stand out in sharp relief and really bother me). But I can see how I'd still be carrying the expectation of poverty deep in my subconscious. What a good lesson. I must work on getting rid of that. Thanks again, FDB! :hi:

13. My formative years had a lot of "lack" in them, for various
reasons. I recall in first grade, my family got a lot of government subsidized food (the tin cans with the black lettering on them....), and my parents had a lot of fights about money. Now, I was never lacking the bare essentials, but I wouldn't say that my family was financially comfortable either. I know that my parents sometimes robbed Peter to pay Paul, so I was witness to the "not enough money" meme that ran through my life, and that still runs through my life.

I am definitely going to work on the hypnosis aspect, to see if I can get to the part of my subconscious that is still holding on to the not-so-healthy aspects of my relationship to money.

7. I wasn't going to bring up hypnotherapy, until
I saw your post.

I, too, recently did an intensive program in hypnotherapy, and among the things worked on in class was our attitudes towards money. I also did a session with an experienced hypnotherapist on that topic, and it certainly has rearranged my thinking in that area.

What's so amazing about hypnotherapy is how incredibly fast you can experience genuine, positive, permanent change in your life.

15. I am very glad I was able to do that.
I have to control myself, sometimes, and not just tell everyone that hypnotherapy is the Guaranteed Cure for What Ails Them. Because it may not be. But I am totally convinced of its effectiveness.

What I most notice is that the outward aspects of my life aren't a lot different from what they were, but how I respond inside is completely different.

19. I think that's the key, or A key, SheilaT: how we respond to
the outward aspects of our lives. To me, that's a sign that some internal shift has taken place.

11. Thanks, FDB!
What you say is quite true, yet I forget that sometimes, and instead, just try to act from my conscious mind, forgetting that there are things in my subconscious mind that are holding me back.

14. Okay, I just ordered Tebbets' book, and also one by Orman
titled The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom: Practical and Spiritual Steps So You Can Stop Worrying.

Seems like a good one-two punch to start changing my mindset about money.

I appreciate the suggestions and information you all gave in response to my question. :pals:

18. I just received this today
It's one of the messages from The Secret Scrolls...

If you have "needing money" in your vibration, then you will keep attracting needing money. You have to find a way of being happy NOW, feeling good NOW, and being in joy NOW, without the money, because those great feelings are how you will feel with the money.

Money doesn't bring happiness - but happiness brings money.

----

I don't know if this helps...just thought I'd share it.

21. I like that, SF, and I do think it's true.
I guess that's the crux of my relationship with money: that I always feel I "need" it, and I'm not talking about for extras, but oftentimes, it's for the basics. I knew there was something messed up about that, so I decided to put my question out there.

The responses I've received are wonderful, and I'm betting they will help a lot in changing my mind about my relationship with money.
