Music...what songs speak to you?
Someone earlier posted a thread about what films speak to you? I love the way folks on this site chat back and forth in such a happy constructive way, unlike some other groups on DU.

So what songs speak to you? I have three right off the bat.

"Who Knew?" by Pink. I break into tears just listening to it, even just driving to work. It seems to me to be about someone who died.

"Lean on Me," any version of it. When I was a kid, I was visiting my cousin's and their sweet little neighbor boy was singing this song with the radio. He was a very kind and generous kid. He died in his 20s in plane crash.

And this sort of country song, I don't know who sings it, and I don't know the name. "But I hope someday you get the chance to live like you were dying."

Gee, they're all about death, huh? Oh, well.

1. Good start here
A monster thread from awhile back. Maybe we should resurrect that.

but I couldn't find "son of a preacher man" by Joan Osborne.

Stevie yeah. I named my son for him. I interacted with him once and ran away due to many factors. My kid was conceived around the time he died. No I don't think he is his reincarnation.

Still it's sexy as anything and is worth a listen IMHO

Rickie Lee. I tried to search for her "Gravity" song but alas couldn't find it. This is a classic though. For anyone who's lost anyone.

4. The song that speaks to me so well is . . .
Matchbox 20's "Unwell". I love that song. It speaks about me and to me. I am bipolar, and I understand someone in the band who is bipolar wrote it. I wish more people would listen to those lyrics and understand, "We're just a little "Unwell". Doesn't mean we're crazy. Just means, sometimes, we're a little under the weather.

Gotta be my all time song that speaks to my heart.

Thanks for starting this thread. I will be interesting to see what others find the songs that speak to them.

And, oceanspirit, I love someone who suffers from a mental health disorder. Thank you for that insight. I like that video, the little things popping up in the background.

Two top artists, singing in two different languages. Hakim is a big pop star in Egypt. The song is kinda silly but I love the vibe I get from this video.

8. Like asking which is my favorite flower......
Edited on Sat Feb-02-08 09:52 PM by Dover
Of course I could never choose, unless we narrow it down to what I'm enjoying most recently.
I normally put my 'puter media player on shuffle and listen to everything from opera to bluegrass to jazz, classical, choral, pop....you name it. And I love to listen to them all mixed up together.
Life is a box of chocolates.....!

My flavor of the month is a musician who is new to me - a gift from brother-in-law who really gets my tastes. This year he gifted me with an album by Viktor Krauss (brother of Alison Krauss but a very different music style) called Far From Enough. I love the deep rich eclectic layering, somewhat ethereal, multi-faceted and mesmerizing sound...primarily instrumental with some vocal pieces thrown in. It's also experiential in that he often composes as though he is 'inside' an experience rather than objectifying it...stream of consciousness. My favorite song is titled, Playground.

10. I really love the honesty, playfulness, and naivete of the self-titled Penguin Cafe Orchestra record
The earlier and later ones weren't as honest and fun and bright. The youtube videos of them live are in their later "too polished" phase.

http://www.amazon.com/Penguin-Cafe-Orchestra/dp/B000003S2G/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1202014038&sr=8-1

Try number 10, The Ecstasy Of Dancing Fleas or 11, Walk Don't Run.

11. Moodie Blues and the Beatles
which is dating me, I know. But there were songs from these groups that ushered in my steps on the spiritual path, starting with
"Tomorrow Never Knows" -"turn off your mind, relax and float down stream....."

The Moodies, ever since I first heard them, have given musical direction to my spiritual quest. The ones that mean the most are "The Voice" --"listen to the voice within, and feel a change already begin" and "Deep"--"I wanna touch your love, and I wanna go deep".

I think everyone has music that is theirs, as it were. These are mine.

YES - Wonderous Stories
Anderson

I awoke this morning
Love laid me down by the river
Drifting I turned on up stream
Bound for my forgiver
In the giving of my eyes to see your face
Sound did silence me
Leaving no trace
I beg to leave, to hear your wonderous stories
Beg to hear your wonderous stories 'LA AHA'
He spoke of lands not far
Nor lands they were in his mind
Of fusion captured high
Where reason captured his time
In no time at all he took me to the gate
In haste I quickly
Checked the time
If I was late
I had to leave, to hear your wonderous stories
Had to hear your wonderous stories 'LA AHA, LA AHA'
Hearing
Hearing hearing your wonderous stories
Hearing your wonderous stories
It is no lie I see deeply into the future
Imagine everything
You're close
And were you there
To stand so cautiously at first
And then so high
As he spoke my spirit climbed into the sky
I bid it to return
To hear your wonderous stories
Return to hear your wonderous stories
Return to hear your wonderous stories
LA AH LA AH AH AH
Hearing
Hearing
Hearing
Hearing
Hearing

13. how did I forget this one

this could be for me one of those life-changing songs,
now let's see how much I can remember,
I don't have the CD in my possession currently

"Rad" by Faun
(rad is german for wheel)

tritt in den
kreis zu mir
ein neuer tag ist hier
dein herz bricht
dein herz sticht
ein neuer tag, ein neues licht
dreh dich nicht
um wenn du
nicht will ist das man dich seit
die schlacht verloren
nicht den mut
ein neuer tag, ein alter krieg

tritt in den
kreis zu mir
gegen den strom der zeit
kleiner schritt
latste angst
ein neuer tag ist nicht mehr weit
erinner dich
hofnung kam
hofnung sog weiter
ein altes spiel
erinner dich
ein alter weg, ein neues ziel

alter weg, neues ziel
fallen um zu fliegen
neuer tag, alter krieg
verlieren um zu siegen

now in English, as much as I can remember

step into the circle with me
a new day is here
your heart breaks
your heart stings
a new day, a new light
do not turn away when you wish to be unseen
the battle lost, not the courage
a new day, an old war

step into the circle with me
(I forget the translation of this line)
small step, last fear
a new day is almost here
remember
hope comes, hope moves on
an old game
remember
an old way
a new aim

old way, new aim
fall to fly again
new day, old war
lose to regain

15. Here's my newfound fav-it's GREAT
I've been getting hateful "pass it forward" e-mails lately and was at a loss with how to deal with them-until today. I had the inspired thought to find a "rebuttal" e-mail to send to all fellow recipients of such e-mails - as well as the prior sender that encouraged "my" sender to pass it forward to me. I'm hoping that it helps...even if I reach just one person. And of course, I'm encouraging them to forward it to 10 people, lol.

Enjoy! :hi:

24. Broadway Show Music--Rent
http://youtube.com/watch?v=jbljhS4xDlU

No Day But Today--Forget Regret, or Life is Yours to Miss........Give into love or live in fear

http://youtube.com/watch?v=AWDnRI5nNKA

One Song Glory Time Flies. To me this is an amazing song. I can't help but think of the *real* story of Rent when I hear this--namely, that the genius behind Rent died suddenly during rehearsals. This song is very prophetic, though it is about Roger. I get very sad when I hear it.

"Jonathan Larson, who created the hit rock opera ''Rent,'' died as he was about to achieve success."

27. Years ago
I had a copy of this song on my bathroom mirror. I actually sang it while I put on my make up.
I was Christian then, so there's that flavor.
I still think it's an inspiring song, as it celebrates the creation that I love so much and Father Spirit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuBC4ocgm0c

This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas;
His hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father’s world, the birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white, declare their Maker’s praise.
This is my Father’s world: He shines in all that’s fair;
In the rustling grass I hear Him pass;
He speaks to me everywhere.

This is my Father’s world. O let me ne’er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.
This is my Father’s world: the battle is not done:
Jesus Who died shall be satisfied,
And earth and Heav’n be one.

This is my Father’s world, dreaming, I see His face.
I ope my eyes, and in glad surprise cry, “The Lord is in this place.”
This is my Father’s world, from the shining courts above,
The Beloved One, His Only Son,
Came—a pledge of deathless love.

This is my Father’s world, should my heart be ever sad?
The lord is King—let the heavens ring. God reigns—let the earth be glad.
This is my Father’s world. Now closer to Heaven bound,
For dear to God is the earth Christ trod.
No place but is holy ground.

This is my Father’s world. I walk a desert lone.
In a bush ablaze to my wondering gaze God makes His glory known.
This is my Father’s world, a wanderer I may roam
Whate’er my lot, it matters not,
My heart is still at home.

"Lady in the Water" especially makes me teary-eyed. So do the "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks - there's just something so inspiring and wistful about the music. Also, "Stardust", especially the track when Yvaine is falling to the earth.

29. For tonight, Stevie Wonder's songs from 1976 "Songs in the Key of Life"
speak to my soul.....still.....

This song, "Black Man" with the message "this world is made for all men" never fails to make my heart soar with joy and hope......mixed with chills and waves of urgent need for this sentiment to be universal...... turning into deep sadness.
The shouted questions and answers by children at the end bring tears to my eyes..... It blows my mind!

http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=pEoE2UQXduA&feature=related

We pledge allegiance
All our lives
To the magic colors
Red, blue and white
But we all must be given
The liberty that we defend
For with justice not for all men
History will repeat again
It's time we learned
This World Was Made For All Men

37. I'm an old guy, but it's a new band.
The Arcade Fire (or just Arcade Fire, they go by both). I saw this on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-wEBmLht5g,
a performance with David Bowie, and I quite unexpectedly burst into tears (silly old man that I am) at the vocal opening of the song, which has no words. I'm not sure this has ever happened to me with any other music, and I'm familiar with most musical forms.

I experimented with playing this over in my mind, and it's not just the note sequence and pattern that gets me, but also something about the actual tempo. In addition, the lyrics of this song and, as far as I can tell, all of their others, simultaneously declare our current troubled state and affirm another possible one. They're creating quite a stir - Bowie, U2, Bruce Springsteen, and David Byrne are all fans. They have a lot of stuff on YouTube, they seem very friendly to the new technologies and communication possibilities.

I know it's a rock band, but it seems they're doing something quite remarkable. I'm not even sure they are entirely aware of all the dimensions of what their music does. Are we seeing indigo kid music now?

38. The other night NPR had a program on the event of the day in Australia -
Edited on Fri Feb-15-08 01:21 AM by higher class
an apology by the new President? Primie Minister? to the aborigonals for taking the children from the families for about a sixty year period in the last century. In the background some music was playing that appealed to my ear. I reserched the source on little clues as I didn't hear all the program and didn't get the name, but I found this -

http://www.archieroach.com.au/

Beautiful design to the web site and you can hear some of the songs.

There is plenty of information about this singer of Australia-rock (or should I say blues-folk?) music - lots of stories if you want to follow it through.

The NPR program had a lot of testimonies of people who experienced the separations and confusion. It can probably be traced on NPR - I think it was Tuesday evening. The apology took place that day. I understand that it is a controversial issue and historically, some Australians didn't even know it went on.

Edited to add that I can't find the song that was playing on the NPR program - The Children Came Back.

Here is a link to his my space site with music from the latest album.

http://www.myspace.com/archieroach (Be sure to listen to Liyarn Ngare in lieu of my not finding the song on NPR)

And another site to a Time Asia article:

www.time.com/.../magazine/2000/0904/cover1.html

There is a lot of that experience running through his music.

39. Don't know why I'm talking so much, but with all the great things I've heard
- there is one that never fades -

watching tv and without warning, I heard Tina Turner and Mick Jagger sing What's Love Got To Do With It.

It was only the tv, but I thought I was standing at the stage edge - can't imagine hearing and watching them dance live.

I've soared to music, but haven't had that many tv events cause a memory to never fade.

What was the original question again? I like universal music.

40. Oh, yes, this reminds me of a Who song I love
We Won't Be Fooled Again!

I don't know if that's the name of it, exactly, but I saw them in concert last year and it was absolutely the best concert ever! I swear I had an orgasm.

43. Jumping in late...
Several have already been mentioned and there are a lot for me. Here are some I can think of off the top of my head...

Imagine - John Lennon (Damn, what a beautiful song. Just perfect.)
What a wonderful World
Somewhere over the rainbow - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole version
Sunshine on my shoulder - John Denver
Ordinary Miracle - Sarah McLachlan
Lots of U2 stuff but especially "With or without you" and "One"
Lots of Dave Matthews Band stuff
Lots of Coldplay stuff - especially "Clocks"
In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel
Lots of Soundtrack stuff - Field of Dreams, Last of the Mohicans, Legends of the Fall, Gladiator, Dances with Wolves
Lots of Mary Chapin Carpenter stuff - especially "Stones in the Road"
When you say nothing at all - Ronan Keating

I'm sure I'm forgetting some major ones, but that's what I can think of right now.

And the line, "But I hope someday you get the chance to live like you were dying." sounds VERY familiar to me too, but I can't place it.
