1. I joined up just to check it out ...
... someone I know recently read the book and loved it so I figured I'd give it a shot (despite my disdain for all things Oprah). I wonder if they will have the videos archived so you could view them at a later time?

Thanks for the head's up!

29. Please let us know what you think about them
I've listened to some of Tolle's audio recordings, and got a lot out of them--and not all from the words he spoke--a lot of stuff comes through at many other levels with him.

and even ask Tolle questions! And it's FREE. I didn't realize that Oprah was 'into' Tolle's work and message. And it looks like the class will be archived, though you may need to register to access that feature.

Excerpt:

Is humanity ready for a transformation of consciousness, an inner flowering so radical and profound that compared to it the flowering of plants, no matter how beautiful, is only a pale reflection? Can human beings lose the density of their conditioned mind structures and become like crystals or precious stones, so to speak, transparent to the light of consciousness? Can they defy the gravitational pull of materialism and materiality and rise above identification with form that keeps the ego in place and condemns them to imprisonment within their own personality?

The possibility of such a transformation has been the central message of the great wisdom teachings of humankind. The messengers—Buddha, Jesus, and others, not all of them known—were humanity's early flowers. They were precursors, rare and precious beings. A widespread flowering was not yet possible at that time, and their message became largely misunderstood and often greatly distorted. It certainly did not transform human behavior, except in a small minority of people.

Is humanity more ready now than at the time of those early teachers? Why should this be so? What can you do, if anything, to bring about or accelerate this inner shift? What is it that characterizes the old egoic state of consciousness, and by what signs is the new emerging consciousness recognized? These and other essential questions will be addressed in this book. More important, this book itself is a transformational device that has come out of the arising new consciousness. The ideas and concepts presented here may be important, but they are secondary. They are no more than signposts pointing toward awakening. As you read, a shift takes place within you.

This book’s main purpose is not to add new information or beliefs to your mind or to try to convince you of anything, but to bring about a shift in consciousness, that is to say, to awaken. In that sense, this book is not "interesting." Interesting means you can keep your distance, play around with ideas and concepts in your mind, agree or disagree. This book is about you. It will change your state of consciousness or it will be meaningless. It can only awaken those who are ready. Not everyone is ready yet, but many are, and with each person who awakens, the momentum in the collective consciousness grows, and it becomes easier for others. If you don’t know what awakening means, read on. Only by awakening can you know the true meaning of that word. A glimpse is enough to initiate the awakening process, which is irreversible. For some, that glimpse will come while reading this book. For many others who may not even have realized it, the process has already begun. This book will help them recognize it. For some, it may have begun through loss or suffering; for others, through coming into contact with a spiritual teacher or teaching, through reading The Power of Now or some other spiritually alive and therefore transformational book—or any combination of the above. If the awakening process has begun in you, the reading of this book will accelerate and intensify it.

An essential part of the awakening is the recognition of the unawakened you, the ego as it thinks, speaks, and acts, as well as the recognition of the collectively conditioned mental processes that perpetuate the unawakened state. That is why this book shows the main aspects of the ego and how they operate in the individual as well as in the collective. This is important for two related reasons: The first is that unless you know the basic mechanics behind the workings of the ego, you won’t recognize it, and it will trick you into identifying with it again and again. This means it takes you over, an imposter pretending to be you. The second reason is that the act of recognition itself is one of the ways in which awakening happens. When you recognize the unconsciousness in you, that which makes the recognition possible is the arising consciousness, is awakening. You cannot fight against the ego and win, just as you cannot fight against darkness. The light of consciousness is all that is necessary. You are that light.

Delphinus, I'd love to see a larger version of your avatar image. It looks absolutely beautiful but it's hard to see fully appreciate it as a thumbnail.

5. Just yesterday I searched this site to see if anyone was discussing "A New Earth"
And lo and behold here it is this morning.

I signed up for the class and I am reading his book now. Years ago I read "The Power of Now"

A New Earth is very interesting and a peaceful read. I am looking forward to the classes and discussions.

It appears that there will be an archive of the classes.

Is anyone else reading the book now?

7. I'm not reading it now, but I want to get to it soon.
Edited on Sun Feb-24-08 11:07 AM by I Have A Dream
I first want to get through "The Biology of Belief" which I agreed to read as part of a group book read here. I've not been a good participant up to this point ( -- sorry DemExpat), but I want to fulfill my commitment there before beginning this new book.

8. Well, I'm a little embarrassed to admit it, but
I don't like this book. I've forced myself to read over 100 pages hoping to love it (or even like it) but none of it has spoken to me. I don't even think I can finish it. I'm disappointed. :(

"The Power of Now". I couldn't finish it. Other people rave about it.
I traded it at Half Price Books long ago.

I hope this one is better because I would love to read something inspiring.
But maybe not, huh?

11. You may want to look at some reviews.
I saw someone's review on Amazon that said New Earth was very similar to TPON. (I never read the other, so I can't comment.)

12. I browsed the amazon site
a bit when I saw this on Oprah. I signed up the day I saw it on her show.

I felt she implied this book was easier to access, if you know what I mean.
Can you review it for me?

21. Hmmm...
I thought the book (the 100+ pages I read) could easily have been condensed into just a few pages. To me, the book seemed repetitious and somewhat obvious.

However, as I was reading, I kept thinking of a person that I believe would benefit from the book because their ego is overwhelming and damaging to others. So, in that sense, I would recommend the book to someone with that type of personality.

(Maybe that's why I don't relate to the book. I purposely distance myself from egoists, and have even eliminated some from my life who were family, because I can't identify with or tolerate their behavior.)

I think when you start reading the book, if it's going to speak to you, it will happen early in the book, so you can make your decision fairly quickly.

17. That happens to everyone
I've had books on my shelf that others raved about and for some reason or another I was not able to get into it at all. Then all of a sudden you grab the book and it has you hooked.

Maybe right now you don't need it.

Put it away for now and don't fret about it.

Did you sign up for the classes?

Nothing to feel bad about. Each person's path is unique; that you realize this is not right for you shows you know how to trust your inner feelings. Go with that which sings to your heart.

13. Here's a video of Tolle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AugWiDv17Yg

I would really like to get into this. I know a lot of people who reference him when they talk about their path. But, as I wrote elsewhere, I couldn't get into The Power of Now.

It's exciting to hope that he has a useful message.

I don't know anything about this book; a friend sent me the link to the webinar, and I thought that some people here might be interested. The technology that allows this to take place is wonderful.

Thanks for the video; I'm going to check it out now.

I found out about it the other day when Oprah had Marianne Williamson on her show (hadn't watched Oprah in years but I'm a fan of Marianne's). Just signed up tonight. Lucky for me my sister has the book so I can read the chapter tonight.

I hope there will be some on-going conversation about the class while it goes on here, I'll be curious to see what other's experiences are during the class.

I'm new to this forum and I look forward to getting to know you all!
