I saw a beautiful crescent moon just before sunrise this morning
and I saw a bright morning star just to the left of it, and another fainter star just above the moon, so that they made a perfect 30-60-90 triangle (the long side being from the moon to the bright star to its left).

Can you help me identify these beautiful stars/planets? And is the triangle significant or are the geometries only significant on paper?

Thanks very much.

Your experience reminds me of the words at the end of Salat, one of my prayers

Oh Messenger, Christ, Nabi of God
Thou whose heart constantly reaches upward
Thou comest on earth with a message
As a dove from above when dharma decays
And speaketh the words that are put into thy mouth
As the Light filleth the crescent moon.
Let the Star of Divine Light shining in your heart,
Be reflected in the hearts of your devotees.

May the Message of God reach far and wide
Illuminating and making the whole of humanity
As one single family in the parenthood of God.

2. Sorry for busting into the conversation with pedanticism...
...but I've read that in Hindu paintings, the crescent moon indicates enlightenment. You likely already know this :)

3. I didn't know this!
In Sufism, the crescent moon indicates a capacity to be filled. We actually do a walking practice of the various phases of the moon. Interesting about the Hindus--now when I do the crescent moon and am "too bright" I can say I'm doing the Hindu version! :)

6. I'm not coming up with any quick references via google- I don't remember where I read that
but it obviously means as many things to as many persons as have posted on the internet! :)

8. The crescent moon reminds me of this Tao Te Ching verse
We join spokes together in a wheel,
but it is the center hole
that makes the wagon move.

We shape clay into a pot,
but it is the emptiness inside
that holds whatever we want.

We hammer wood for a house,
but it is the inner space
that makes it livable.

We work with being,
but non-being is what we use.

4. Maybe help ..
Over the coming month, Saturn will remain easy to see near the bright star Regulus in the constellation Leo the Lion. As the month progresses, you can see that Saturn appears a bit higher in the east each night, as darkness falls.

9. Eureka! It was the moon, venus to the left and mercury just above.
It was the Moon, Venus to the left and Mercury just above. Neptune was also to the left of Venus but it was dawning and I couldn't see it. They were rising in between Capricorn and Aquarius. Closer to Capricorn.

Thank you very much for the link to the astroviewer! It's a java applet that you can download and run on your desktop by the way.

As far as crescents are concerned the moon is waning and only the *tiniest sliver* remained. So is that a crescent? Or is a crescent only when the moon fills?

5. I saw that the other morning -
was up at the oddest time and figured it was Luna calling me to come see her beauty. Thank you for the reminder of that special moment.
