4. I saw the sun glistening off the water in a strikingly brilliant way
after a kind friend had been amazingly generous to me and I was immersed in the sense of the rebirth and the intoxicating hope of rebirth as well.

Glad you got the same sense from one of our dear fine feathered friends.

peace

Almost happy solstice.

6. It is not spring here yet
I keep seeing commercials and whatnot...it is spring all over the country, but the frozen north is still frozen. :-(

Every day gets us closer...that's what I keep telling myself.

7. I've seen a few robins, but spring is coming in cold in my area.
It started snowing on the 19th. Lightly, not sticking. We laughed and said it was winter's goodbye. On the 20th, it snowed a little more. I got up yesterday morning to an inch of snow on the ground and temperatures in the teens. Most of the snow melted off during the day, except for patches on the north sides of buildings, trees, rocks, etc.. It's 15 degrees out there right now, at 8:31 AM..

We are about out of firewood for the season. I'm using a small chainsaw to cut up some dead branches, and we're going through some old wood I kept when we tore a fence down, trying to keep the house warm.

9. It snowed again last night!
2-3 inches sticking on the ground as I write. I expect it will snow at least one more time in April before we are done. It always does.

I need tales of tulips and greening grass...please.

10. Your wish...
In NYC, forsythia, witch hazel, snowdrops, crocus, and early daffodils are in bloom. The green stems of other bulbs are sticking several inches out of the ground. Yes, plantlife is starting to wake up from its long slumber.
From my window, I see a small house wren (I think that's what it is) with a piece of white fluff in its mouth. Undoubtedly fluff is a great find for nestmaking.

Now the downside to this beautiful beginning of spring: my cat has turned into a rooster. For the last couple of days, at the crack of dawn, he has started mewing, loudly and insistently. I think he is excited by hearing the birds and wants me to open the shades so he can see them too. I have to figure out a way to get him to sleep later.

11. No tulips here, Callie
because the deer would devour every last one. They already wiped out a planter of pansies that a friend gave me for my birthday.

But we have daffodils dancing in the front garden, little blue periwinkle flowers all over the front azalea bed, and deep green grass looking like it's ready to be mowed.

Some cherry trees and Bradford pears in the neighborhood are just bursting into clouds of blossom -- they should be perfect in a couple of days.

We're in Rockville, Maryland, about 15 miles northwest of Washington DC. Over in the city, it's cherry blossom time, but there is no way I'm going into town this weekend with the mobs of tourists and the National Marathon. We have out-of-town relatives from NJ and Colorado who will ride the Metro in again today to see the sights, but my husband and I have to work.

Instead, we might go to Brookside Gardens in Wheaton on Sunday. They have gorgeous cherry trees, lots of daffodils, and a Japanese pagoda-shaped building next to a pond with weeping willows that are coming into leaf. It's exquisite.

Hope that helps. Hang in there -- it will be springtime before you know it!

12. Spring is full-blown here...
My back yard is a riot of blue and yellow and green. There's a wild sorrel that blooms every spring with bright lemon-yellow blossoms, and it is prolific this year. The forget-me-nots I planted a few years ago have re-seeded themselves all over the yard and their sweet, blue flowers are mingling with the yellow sorrel. Lush and lovely!

The crocus and daffodils in the front yard have come and gone, but there are tulips in bloom down the block... and camellias and tulip trees. Redbuds and almonds have bloomed and their tender green leaves are coming out now.

The birds are nesting and there are some babies I can hear, too. Yellow-billed magpies have a nest in one of the huge oaks in the neighbor's yard. From my own yard, I can hear the sweet trills and gobbles of the babies when the parents bring them food. :)

I'm sooooo glad I have next week off (spring break) so I will have time to get some work done in my gardens and tend to my pond. The fish are awake and fat and hungry!

This is my absolute favorite time of year. :) :) :)

14. It snowed last night. A lot.
Yeppers, it's spring in WNY!

Meh, we're used to it. Supposed to get up into the 50s by next week, which is typical.
