Crossposting from pets grp - i rescued a baby squirrel
Edited on Fri Apr-04-08 10:15 AM by crikkett
from the jaws of my landlord's cat. It's not dead, it's moved all it's appendages and it wiggles it's whiskers, and it's sleeping in a basket by my desk, in the folds of a sweater. It doesn't have teeth yet.

what do I do now? What can I feed it and how? It's been two hours since I found it and two hours until the first wildlife center opens. This thing might need a feeding soon. Should I keep it warm? Should I try to get the adult squirrels around here to notice? They feed at the foot of my porch.

Thanks

PS I'm so glad it's not dead, and I don't want to hurt it. I appreciate any help.

1. Wildlife rescue
My understanding is that a squirrel is considered wildlife and you should turn it over to a group that handles wildlife rescue. If you don't know who that is, call the local animal shelter and see if they know.

3. done
someone's coming to get it in a few mins. The wildlife rescue people said it would be returned to this area after it was rehabilitated... the lady I spoke to was so nice.

2. Definitely keep the baby warm.
You might also call your vet.

8. They are wonderful...
We took a baby possum to one of our local wildlife people one time. She was soooo sweet. She cuddled and cooed and loved that little baby. We loved her!

They offer classes here to become a rehabber, and I've thought about taking the classes, but I'd want to work with birds, and you have to have a special room to devote just to the birds and we just don't have the space to do that. :( Maybe someday... I'd really LOVE doing that, though.

7. Great work, crikkett!
We've done this so many times... baby squirrels, possums, and numerous birds... it's always a challenge, but the rewards are great, too. :) :) :) Kudos to you for caring.
