Don't Mess with the Tree
This is a true story--something a dear friend told me. It reads like a Stephen King novel. I know the people who own the property.

Their family is in the real estate business and they rent commercial and residential property. The parents are now elderly and one of the sons manages the business. He is trying to clean it up from years of bad decisions made by the father about tenants. The father wasn't always a bad businessman--au contraire, at one time he was quite a good businessman who developed not only property but numerous other businesses. But after a quadruple bypass, his judgment went to hell in a handbasket and he lost his touch. While he should have retired a decade ago, he continues to meddle in the business and make poor decisions.

Thus the son, whom we will call Ken, has had to deal with some truly ignorant tenants. One day he was at a rental property when he saw a tenant's kid tearing the bark and branches off a tree. This kid has some mental problems or some type of mental disability. Ken went to the door and told the mother to tell the kid to stop the tree abuse. The mother was not exactly cooperative and seemed to think it out of line to ask her kid to stop destroying the huge tree which affords so much to the property in the way of shade and beauty.

A few days later this disturbed kid hangs himself from the tree. Yes, a suicide.

The family asks the landlord to have the tree taken down. Ken refuses, saying the tree had nothing to do with their son's death.

About six months later, Ken is again at the property and he sees a biker on his Harley-Davidson, a friend of the family whose son hung himself. The man parks the Harley and proceeds to go at the tree with a chain saw. Seeing destruction being done to the tree, Ken rushes to the man and tells him to stop. He refuses and Ken has to call the police to get him to stop. Having been forced to stop, the man issues threats to Ken and tells him he is the next victim of his chain saw.

Bizarre, yes?

So two days later this biker flips his Harley over two times and dies in the accident.

So yeah, don't mess with the tree.

1. Um, Wow.
I may just hang on to this story for future reference.

I get SO VERY MAD when people cut down trees for beauty reasons, or even worse, when they build a development, CUT DOWN ALL THE TREES, and then PLANT NEW ONES.

Work AROUND them, you dumbasses.

3. That's the rajo guna (mode of passion) tendency
Knock everything down and create something new!

The sattva guna (mode of goodness) tendency is to maintain, to preserve what exists and keep it in good order for the future.

I aspire for the mode of goodness myself.
