I really need to understand this 2012 galactic alignment thing, astronomically speaking...

there's something i don't get

why are we so focused on 12/22/2012, the winter soltice of that year? why not the summer soltice? Why not just any day, since the real issue is that the sun is aligned with the center of the galaxy and that doesn't happen for just one day.

it almost seems to me, that at least for us in the northern hemisphere, that we would be more in direct alignment when our side of the earth is pointing more directly with the sun, which would be on the summer soltice.



I also don't get why the wobbole of the earth has anything to do with this alignment between the earth, sun and galaxy center. It seems to me that if the three are in alignment, that would be a completely independent event, related mainly to the orbit of the earth around the sun, and how it relates to the galactic equator. I'm missing something here about how the angle of the rotation of the earth affects the alignment. ????:shrug:
