practical help -- we're all Iranians Now
This is from the Presidential page, which I know some people don't venture out into.

The Republican Guard searches twitter by location and time zone to find and identify protesters. There's a movement afoot to make it harder for them by changing your twitter settings to location and time zone for Tehran. Here are the instructions on how:

You change your twitter profile.

From Boing Boing:

Help cover the bloggers:
change your twitter settings so that your location is TEHRAN and your time zone is GMT +3.30. Security forces are hunting for bloggers using location and timezone searches. If we all become 'Iranians' it becomes much harder to find them.

Twitter is the main way for Iranians to evade the govt's blocking of communication and news.

1. That's a great idea!
I'm not on twitter, but it should help thwart their efforts to track people now :)

By the way, here's a map of Tehran. It's a large image, so you'll have to plug the url into your browser versus making the image show here.

I got it from this site: Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection

"I am Spartacus." That is a great idea, northernlights!

3. maybe you can educate me...
I'm afraid to venture in once again in GD to ask. :)

First of all, this is a GREAT idea. I'm not on Twitter either, but hopefully lots of people who are know about this.

The only thing about the events in Iran in the last few days that strike me as odd are how all the messages shown -- both twitter messages, as well as signs people are holding up -- are in English.

Are there THAT many English-speaking young people over there? And do you think the messages are in English because they're appealing to the Western world?

Sorry for my ignorance, but this intrigues me.....

4. you are not alone in wondering that

The subject has been raised a couple times. I actually first noticed that the police jackets say POLICE on the back of them, too.

I think the protesters are mostly the students (educated) and have English as a 2nd language. It sure seems like the signs are aimed at us. I did notice, however, on al Jazeera, that the signs they show are in Farsi and English. Maybe the msm seeks out signs in English? Maybe twitter doesn't support farsi yet? Or is easier in english?

But the police jackets really freaked me out a bit!

(btw, OGR, been meaning to ask...did you finally settle down to reading The Four Agreements? I finished it and Beyond Fear.)

6. it's already out there
and in some other forums. I cross-posted it into here because I know some ASAH people don't like to venture out into the nightmare of the samsara.
