More awesome conspiracy theories
I use the term "awesome" to denote the magnitude of the wackiness involved to come up with this stuff. Also, many of you will be familiar with a lot of these theories, but a few were new to me, and I figured that would be the case with most people.

So, enjoy:

My favorite one is that the early Middle Ages never actually happened.

1. Variant on the Sex Gum, from Egypt
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 04:48 PM by onager
During the nearly 3 years I've been in Egypt, I've seen a variation of that "sex gum" story several times in the Egyptian newspapers.

This version of the story originate in Egyptian high schools. It involves a gum that is not only a powerful aphrodisiac, but renders the chewer unconscious (or nearly so). This story seems to be spread by teen girls sending e-mails and SMS messages warning their friends not to accept any (insert brand name here) gum.

Obviously Egyptian teen boys must be making a lot of trips to the Gaza border crossing, to score gum from that scientist.

Not quite as wacky as a story about virgin birth, but probably serves much the same purpose. "Hey, it wasn't MY fault..."

2. Oh wow!
Fascinating! I only knew two of those - the alien reptiles and the faked moon landings.

I have come across a few strange ones on GD - my favourite is that Ambrose Evans-Pritchard has huge sinister power over America and the world.
