3. It's only a little more elaborate than flipping a coin
I've always found when I'm torn between two (usually unattractive) choices, flipping a coin gives me just enough time to decide. I often don't even bother to look at it once I catch it.

Undoubtedly, the same phenomenon is at work with the I Ching, more suited to government strategy than one's love life or whatever, with people deciding while the coins are dropping and interpreting the general statements at the end accordingly.
